MANUREWA TOWN BOARD.

Monthly Meeting. The ordinary monthly mcetiug of the Manurewa Town Board uas held lnt Thursday, when the members present were Messrs 1. J. Corip, chairman, H. V. Burton, C. H. Lupton, and C. and ti. Coxhead, with the cle-k, Mr A. G. Mabee, B\ -LA W S. A letter was read from tbe Maiiukfeu County Council agreeing that ihe Board should enlorce the Council's bv-laws and collect all fees withii the district, providing that terenty five per cent of all such fees received were handed over to the Council. Ihe claik explained tbat the communication was a reply to an application made to tbe Council in the first week of July. Members thoight that better terms fright have tern givcD, but it was agreed to accept them. KKPAIK OF ROAUS. Ac application for a abare of the £2O and uncollected rates which are to be handed over to the loan Board by the Manurewa Road Board, to be spent on that portion of tha road between Great South and Oram's roide, taken" over by the Town Board, was forwarded by Mr M. A. Costar. The chairman remarked tbat a much larger sum than had be e .n collected frou the fapakura Valhy district had bren expended tbereon, but advocate 1 an inspection bring made of the road. He suggested that a Works Committee should be set up to inspect roads, etc.. which would be tbe subject - cf similar aoplications in the tuture, with a view of submit'iog reports tbereon to the Buard. It was rerolved, on tbe motion of Mr G. Coxftead, seco ded by Mr C. H. Lupton, tbat an inspection ot all the roads in the district should be made by tbe Board on Thursday next, with a view of ascertaining the roads required to be repaired. TKANSFEK OF ROADS.

The clerk reported that at the last monthly meeting of the Papakura Valley Road Board a resolution was passed which gave the Town Board full control over Claude and Arthur roads. Further, the Road Board agreed to a financial adjustment between the two authorities and were tJ pay the Town Boatd £2O and outstanding rite i, amounting to approximately £lB. This ha considered to- be a fair adjustment. The chairman propraed, and it was agred, that the roads should be insp cted at the close of the meeting, and a decision arrived at as to what fuither action, if any, the Board should take in the matter.

MANUREWA CHILDREN'S HOME.

Ia regard to the application made by the management of the Manurewa Children's Home for that lustitution to be exempted from the payment of rates the clerk reported tint particulars, as asked for, concerning a similar institution at Papatoetoe bad not come to band, nor had the Government Auditor yet replied to his communication thereon. The matter was accordingly deferred for further consideration to the ntxt melting. THE RAILWAY SERVICE. A report of a deputation, consisting of Messrs Pegler, Luptou and the chairman, as represntatives of the Railway League, to Mr Duncan in respect to a better passenger timetable between Auckland and Fapakura, was given by tha chairman, whj eaid that Mr Duncan bad now under consideration the revision oi the time-table and was trying to give the district an improved service. Ibe chairman aho stated that representations to the Minister of Railways were to be made at a later date.

THE CLEKKSHIP,

In accordance with notice of motion given at the last meeting of tbe Board, Mr Burton moved that Mr A. G. Mabee should be appointed permanent cletk to the Board and that a temporary clerk should be appointed to act during Mr Mabee's forthcoming absence on military duty. The chairman seconded.

Mr Lupton opposed Mr Mabee's appointment on principle, one reason being that no local body bad appointed a single man as clerk during tbe period rf the war. He further pointed out that the petition presented at a previous meeting of the Board asking fur either a returned soldier or a married man to be appointed to the position was signed by the majority of the electors who had placed the Board in pnwer. Tbe chairman reminded members that Mr Mabee offered his services to the military authorities in the eaUy part of tbe war. As to the petition, he claimed that a number ot tbe signatories bad attached their names thereto in complete ignorance of what it meant. Mr Lupt'in considered that the ! petition was quite lucid, and that a school child could have read it. A member: Those who had charge of the petition failed to explain to those who signed that Mr Mabee had enlisted, and a great majority of the signatures were obtained accordingly. Mr C. Coxhead remarked that one person at least had told him that if he had had knowledge of Mr Mabee having offered his services he would not have signed the petition. Mr Mabee said tint since tbe petition was signed several residents had come to him and had apologised for sinning, explaining that they had been toll that be was "dodging." On the motion being put to the melting it was carried, Mr Lupton alone dissenting.

K (JADING IMFKUVEMENTS

On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr G. Uoxhead it was resolved to request the Manukau County Council to arrange for making a footpath and kerbing the sums for a distance of one chain on either side of the northern corner of Great South and Station roads, ibe Board to defray half coat, and, further, for similar work to be carried out along the Great South road to Weymouth road. Mr Lupto.i gave notice of motion tbat he would move at tbe following meeting of the Board that the Board'* loading conditions ba reconsidered with a view of modifying tbe same.
