TUAKAU.
Nine candidates Lave come forward for the seven seats on the Tuakau Town Board. Of the " old" Board, Mr W. Strahan retires but Messrs J. H. Craig, H. B. Free, Dynes Fulton, W. Glasgow, J. Pirret, and J. S. Ryder offer themselves for re-election. The new aspirants for office are Messrs B. G. Geraghty, W. G. Graham and W. Gubb. Polling takes place to-moirow.
Private J. R Warner, of the Infantry Section of tho 18th Reinforcements, who had been on his final leave in Tuakau, returned to Trent ham Camp last Saturday evening. Whether or not it is that residents anticipate a rise in the value of property situated within the area included in the loan allocations, in the event of the loan being carried, a strong demand is in evidence for properties on the main Tuakau road. It is understood that the freehold of Mr J. Poland's property of 10 acres, used for dairying and cropping purposes has just passed into the hands Mr W. Graham.
. " Jack Frost " made his presence felt to an undesirable extent amongst some of the promising potato crops of Harrisville on Saturday morning last, with the result that ui not a few instances they were severely nipped back. With a scarcity of labour through® out the whole Dominion tlixmill workers are hardly procurable. Mr B. Geraghty had intended to commence operations some weeks past, but was forcad to defer making a start. It is now probable, however, that ihe buzz resultant upou the manufacture of liax wiil again be heard from the mill within the course of a few days.
The healthy spirit evinced m patriotic matters in the district was demonstrated by a most successful social held under the auspices of the Ladies' Patriotic Guild at tho L'ublic Hall on Thursday evening last. The concert programme included such talent as the Messrs M. Gregory, W. Mann, E. Churchouse and (J. AlcLean and Mrs 11. King, of Auckland, who delighted the audience wi;h their efforts ; as also did the Misses E. Hunter, E. Patton, T. Duffio, VV. Moncur and Mr T. Patterson. Mrs G. Hunter olftoiated at the piano. In addition t$ the proceeds, amounting to £9 12s 6d, a substantial sum was donated to an appeal for Dominion Christmas Gi'ts. Opportunity was taken by the president of the Patriotic Society, Mr VV. Graham, to prestn: Mr Charles I/ipwood, win has enlisted, with a parcel of comforts. Mr J. Dromgool, who has also enlisted, received an invitation to be present, but an apology for his absence was road by the chairman. The gathering concluded with a dance, music for which was very kiudly supplied by the Misses M. Geraghty and Messrs W. H. Northmore and L. Stevenson. At the invitation of Mr and Mrs life senr., a large company attended a social and danc> in the Public Hall •a Manday Sept. lltb, the gatfaeii g being arranged as a return for similar functions given in honour ol their sons, Mesirs William and Bert Lee, who have enliattd. The proceedings were interspersed with songs by the Messrs Kyder (2) and games which were entered into with great zest. Metsrs C. DceJ, A. Turner and W. Collins acted as M.C. 's t:ir th2 dance, and Messrs L. Stevenson and K. Kyder were responsible for the dance music, Miss 0. Kevtll accompanying the niusical items. A sumptuous supper was pioviderl. 'Love, CourVJp and Marriage" formed the sutj;ct of an addrcS®, full of capital advice and humour, delivered tu a gathering in the Methodist Church oq l'uesdpy evecing Isst by the l?ev. J. Clover, Methodist Minister of Waiuku. The proceedings were opened by Mrs G. D. Hunter rendering the solo "A ferfect Day," with pleasing effect. At the close of the lecture, which took two hours, a hearty vote of thanks was tendered to Mr Clover for his interesting and able address. The Kev. J. B. Suckling, of lJukekohe, in proposing the motion, expressed the hope that the spirit o* the subject would not be forgotten by the audience. A collection to assist the tinances connected with the Home Missionary was taken up.
The present daily average supply of cteam to the New Zealand Dairy Association's lucal depot is 400 gallons, an increase of 70 gallons over the daily supply for the same period ot lapt year. Ifce prospects lor a successful eeasjn arc eminently encouraging.
