Bail ways, the overhead traffic bridge, across the railway line, on *he Great South Boad, Manurewa, with a view of determining as to whether any further work would be required to be done thereto before it is finally handed over to the Council. The day appointed for the inspection was yesterday. The Under - Secretary Public Works Department advised the Council that the Hon. Minister of Public Works would be pleased to meet the chairman and engineer, when in Auckland on the 20th inst. if the Council desired to have unexpended votes now on the estimates transfened to some work or works not provided for on the estimates.— It was resolved that the whole Council should wait on the Hon. Minister as a deputation. A copy of a proclamation taking land for a road and closing a road through Blocks X, Waiioa, and 11, Orere sub - division?, Manukau County, was forwarded by the Under-Secretary, Public Works Department. Burgoyne, D. Shaw, M. Shaw, J. White, H. Oram 'and M. M. Mullins.—The clerk reported that several of the signatories were now deceased, while others had left the district. -Cr Bell said that he signed the petition two years ago, but did not think the present opportune for merging.—On the motion of the chairman it was resolved to return the petition with advice to the effect that it did not comply with the Act. In reply to an enquiry and an application made with reference to Messrs Noble's explosives magazine on the Maraetai-Clevodon road, the Minister of Public Works advised that the Minister of Internal Affairs had decided to grant, a five years' license in respect to the magazine, ami that no further action would be taken in regard to Beach road, as it is only while the road remains in its present unformed condition that its position relative to that of the magazine (which is under the regulation five chains) can be disregarded as a factor of danger to the public. He understood that Messrs Noble have approached the Manukau County Conncil with an offer to contribute £2OO towards the cost of forming the Beach road on condition that the Government granted an exemption from the five chain regulation for a period of eight years, and pointed out that apparently the decision of the Minister of Intornal Affairs in regard to the license will preclude any improvement being effected to the Beach road for a period of live years.—The clerk reported that a copy of the letter had been submitted to the local agents of the Noblo Explosives Company, who hud forwarded it on to their Sydney oflice. The chairman remarked that the Minister's deliberation would not prevent the expenditure of the amount on the portion of road desired (which was outside the live chain radius).—lt was decided to defer further consideration until a reply was received by the local branch of the Explosives Company to their communication forwarded to Sydney. Cr Muir mentioned that the ratepayers residing on Eanfurly Eoad, Manurewa, had borrowed £3OO towards making and metalling the road and desired the Council to cut down the steep portion, where it approaches the Papakura Valley main road (a County road).—The foreman was instructed to prepare an estimate of tho work.
The chairman reported that he had been requested to deliver an address on the merging of Koad Boards, at Mamirowa, l»ut advised the person to propyl with tho petition which was in circulation in the district, —
Cr Muir remarked that the Eoad B. t rd would probably merge. The foreman, Mr J. Dixon, reported as foJlows :—Papakura Biding—The Great South Eoad had baen patched with metal and a surfaceman had been kept woiking on the new earthwork on the Biookby Boad. He, suggested that landers be called at once for 800 yards of spawls from White's Mountain for Weymouth, South and Manurewa end of Brookby roads and a further 600 yards of spawls from Brflokby, and that the Manurewa Town Board's attention should be drawn to the fact that water is running from off one of their roads on to a'Cottnty Boad. With reference to Mr Nield's request he reported that he had made an inspection of the loca ity and that Mr Nield required 110 feet of kerbing with one invest and a footpath with six yards of scoria. He estimated the cost would be £l4. Three days' grading would be necessary on side roads to prepare them for the summer traffic. Wairoa Biding—ln company with Cr Bell he interviewed Mr P. Gee and arrangements wore made to temporal ily turn the water he had complained of, down his boundary fence until arrangements are made to take the permanent levels. It would take four days to satisfactorily grade and trim up the side roads. The concrete pipes landed on the Orere beach were taken delivery of and their safety guaranteed by Mr Cambridge. Four had since, however, been broken by heavy soas and some which had beeu buried in the sand had B'nce been removed to safety.—The report was adopted. In accordance with a resolution arrived at at a meeting held on Monday last at Papakura, when representatives of the Papakura Valley and Wairoa Eoad Boards met and considered a suggestion to ink up two roads to that a direct route would -be available between Takanini and Clevedon. Cr A. D. Bell, as the Wairca Board's representative, along with Mr E. 1). McLennan, representing the Papakura Valley Boad Board, requested the Council to raise a loan of approximately £ISOO for the construction of the road, the Takanini end to junction with the Great South Boad.—lt was resolved that the route should be viewed and that a preliminary report should be made before any action was" taken.
