RAGLAN LICENSING COMMITTEE.

At the .quarterly meeting of the Raglan Licensing Committee, held at Ngaruawahia on Thursday, the renewal of the licenses of the Tuakau and Mercer Hotel, which had beeu deferred from last mooting, pending satisfactory improvements being effected to both hotels, came up for consideration, be/ore Messrs E. Rawson, SM. (chair), 0. Johnston and G. P. Ewmg. TI7AKAU HOTEL. Constable Taylor stated that the drainage was still defective, a drain near the footpath giving off an offensive odour. This, in hip opinion, should be remedied before the dry weather sets in. Otherwise the improvements as stipulated had been effected and were satisfactory. Mr Ewing doubted whether there was sufficient fall to allow of the water to run away. Inspector Cassels said it was hard on the licensee, but he thought the owners should be compelled to effect proper remedies. ' . Inspector Gassells said it seemed to him that the only way to get it put light was to defer the question of granting a transfer. It was fiually decided to draw the attention of the Health Department to the defect in question and in the meantime grant the transfer. MERCEft HOTEL. Mr Brown appeared on behalf of the owners and licensee and stated that the work of making alterations to the hotel had been let by contract and was making satisfactory progress. The renovations woie not yet complete but were well on the way. Constable lloran gave evidence of having inspected the premises and said an honest attempt had been made to comply with the instructions. Inspector Cassells stated that a sum of £boo had been spent on the alterations. The committee expressed satisfaction at the Teport and granted the license.
