Karaka Ratepayers' Objection*
At the monthly meeting ot the Karaka Koad Board, held nn Saturday, Mr John Scfclaepfer, member for tba Paerata Ward of the Koad Board District, presented a petition, bearing the names of fift-eo signatories of ratepayers, objecting to the depo?it (f ngb'-soil from Pukekobe adjacent lo the Paerata railwav station on the ground that it was dangerous to the health of the residents of Paerata and to the travelling public. Mr Schlaepfer also handed to th2 chairman the sum of £4 7s fill, which had been subscribed by the signatories with a view of legal advice being taken by tbe Board, failing an amicable settlerLcnt.
The petition asked for tbe Board's support in preventing a continuation of the practise. Mr Scblaepfcr end that Mr Hawkins, the mght-ioil contractor, bad intended to be present at the meeting as he wanted tbc Board's permission to deposit th2 night-soil on Mr Blanchard's properly inr-tcad of the present fi'c, but he was rot in attendance Mr Schlaepfer added that the property owners adjacent (0 Bl*nchard'» were very mticb acainst permission as suggested being granted in respect of that property. On the cbairmati's advice, Mr Scblnepfer agreed to have a further document drawn up, rhowing that tbe donors of the £1 7* <H would like the Board to expend tbe amount in obtaioiog legal advice on tbe matter, and, lurther, if oece3saty tu intimate their willingness to defray tbe total cost of taking the matter into Court if tfaey d: Jircd the Boaid to jo s >.
