WAIKATO RIVER BOARD.
♦ Monthly Meeting. The regular monthly meeting of the Waikato Hirer Bo>rd was held on Saturday, when the following members were present, viz : Messrs A. G C. Glass (chairman), M. Gallery, M. Cronin and A. Lapwood, together with the secretary (Mr R. Carter) and the foreman (Mr Sallais). SPECIAL BATE. At a special meeting held prior to the ordinary meeting a motion confirming the striking of special rates for the Roto Ngaro and Maungatawhiri loans was confirmed. CLASSIFICATION Or LANDS. Mr D. Mcßae Peacock, of Tuakau, and Mr M. Higgins wrote complaining of the classification of their properties.—Both objections were deferred to be considered before the next rate is struck. FINANCE. It was intended that the matter of finance should be gone into, but owing to Mr Ed. Hallett's absence it was decided to defer consideration thereof. LOWEMNd LAKE KOTO NciAllO. It was agreed that in the event of no tenders being accepted for the draining of Roto Ngaro drains the Board should do the work, the loan for the operations having al-ready-been subscribed by the ratepayers concerned. UlVElt WORKS. Tho foreman was instructed to complete tho groyning in hand near the Sheep Paddock and then to deal with about threo miles of groynes from tho Devil's Elbow to Kaitangata. The forman reported that through the bad weather of last month very little dredging had been done. lie had made a start to caulk tho two punts, and tho steimer and boats bad been cleaned reuiy for painting when necessary. It was resolved that tho punts should bo tarred and fitted up ready for use, and that the dredge punt should be strengthened before making a start to clean tho Pokeno creek. DKAI.MXO OPERATIONS. The chairman was authorised to conveno a meeting at Whangamarino station of all tho ratepayers in that district with a viow of thoroughly draining and stop-banking the whole of that area, since it has been proved this winter that the swamps alreidy drained lower down are doing exceptionally well. One Hat in particular i 3 practically immune from flood waters, while another was only partly under waicr for a few days, showing that tho advice given by Mr C. D. Kennedy, the Board's consulting engineer, three years ago, has been proved to be absolutely correct in every detail. When he was asked to repoit on the Whangamarino swamp he advised that tho swamp at Mori Mori should b8 taken in hand, as he considered there would be no difficulty in draining it, and also as it was adjoining the railway line it would show outsiders the valu) of the land, which had been considered absolutely useless.
