TUAKAU TOWN BOARD.
Monthly Meeting.
The last meeting of the Town Board, prior to the election, was held on Tuesday evening last the members present being Messrs Dynes Fulton (chairman), H. Craig, H. B. Free, W. Strahan, J. Pirret, Capt. and the clerk, Mr A. H. Tapper. ELECTRIC LIGHTING POSSIBILITIES. A lengthy letter dealing with matters appertaining to an electric lighting system was received from Mr J. Koutly, the Board's Consulting Engineer. The chairman explained that it was a reply to an enquiry made by the Board as to whether the water power at the Board's disposal would be suitable for providing power for electric lighting purposes. The engineer, however, was apparently under the impression that the Board intended considering an electric lighting scheme in connection with the loan proposals, but such was not the case. The letter was " received." SUSPENSION BRIDGE PROJECT. Mr H. Oldham made representations by letter for a suspension bridge to be erected across the creek in front of his property so as to connect the road there with the new road on the opposite side of the creek. Mr Craig considered that applicant should have made an offer to assist the proposal financially. The Works Committee was deputed to look into the matter. A DRAINAGE MATTER. Tin District Health Officer advised the Board that from an inspection he had made of the septic tank at the Tuakau Hotel and the drains connected therewith, he considered it would be advisable for the drain crossing the road to be connected with the drain beneath the railway line. The chairman reported that complaints had been made to him by people residing adjacent to the drain. On the proposal of Mr Free the Works Committee was instructed to act in the matter immediately. LOAN PROSPECTS. The War Relief Association, writing in reply to the Board's enquiry whether the Association would be able to make a loan to the Board of from £IO,OOO to £12,500, stated that they m regretted being unable to consider the application owing to the necessity for keeping the balance of their funds in a floating state in order to meet the heavy demands that were unfortunately coming forward. MISS TAYLOR v. THE BOARD. Mr H. G. R. Mason, solicitor, of Pukekohe, who acted for Miss Taylor, Pukekohe, in her recent action against the Town Board, in which judgment was given for plaintiff, confirmed a verbal agreement arrived at between himself and the chairman respecting the payment to his client of the moneys due her, viz., that £3O would be accepted at the end of October and part balance (say £2O) at the end of November and the balance at the end of December. The clerk was instructed to advise Mr Mason that the Board would be pleased to meet the arrangements.
VALEDICTORY. At the conclusion of the meeting the chairman took the opportunity, as it was the final meeting of the Board before the election, to thank members for the assistance they had given in bringing the district into a state of advancement. He regretted that Mr Strahan was not seeking re-election. Mr Fulton added that Mr J. Routlj'. their Consulting Engineer, had the confidence of every member of the Board, while the clerk, Mr A. H. Tapper, who was working for a small remuneration in comparison to his duties, kept his accounts always up-to-date and accurate. The Board's surfaceman, Mr Wilson, was also referred to as being a trustworthy and capable employee.
