TUAKAU SOUTH.

Owing to the continued wet and boisterous weather ilaxmilling operations have been almost at a standstill during the last month. Messrs Frost Bros, have _ taken advantage of the spell to overhaul the machinery in their mill. They are installing one of their patent shaking and washing machines which have proved a decided success. New accommodation is also being erected for the employees and the whole plant is being put on up-to-date lines. An experienced manager is taking charge of milling operations and a large output is anticipated for the coming season. Trade is brisk on the river now and the " All British " boats are running large cargoes oE coal and timber to the Otaua and Aka Aka. Last week fifty tons were brought down from Huntly at one load. The s.s. Fieetrader is also bringing down plentiful supplies for the local market. When the Waikuto Shipping Company, Ltd., comes into operation it is anticipated that coal and goods depots will be erected at various landings along the river. l*n the near future a very large coal trado will be carried 011 in the Lower Waikato. The river is very high and is oyer the banks in many places and most of the swamps are inundated. Owing to tlio Hoods the whitebait are not running freely, but a good catch is anticipated when the water •lears. Mr F. C. Frost is starting canning operations. The local brand is well and favourably known in Sydney and Melbourne and there is a good demand for it from the merchants of those cities. Several new launches have been placed tin the liver lately by natives. One ellcct of the recent heavy heavy weather was to undermine one of the beacons erected soino few weeks past at the entrance to the Waikato Heads. The sand shifted, thereby jeopardising the structure, and as a result Captain Attwood, of Mie Marine Department, ii-ssisted by Mr J. Lip wood, carried out repairs.
