TUAKAU
FARMERS' UNION SOCIAL. A concert and dance arranged by the Tuakau branch of the Farmers' Union to assist the funds rtf the Patriotic League took place in tho Public Hall on Wednesday evening last. The great success of the function testified to the careful attention that had been paid to the details of arrangements and to the energy asserted by those to whose capable hands the preliminary work had been entrusted. The proceeds amounted to £l4 10s 3d. It was intended that Mr A. A. Ross, Auckland Provincial President of the Union, would deliver an address on the Navy and matters concerning the Union, but an apology for his enforced absence was received. Songs were rendered by Misses S. Valentine (Mercer) and T. Duttin (Auckland) and Messrs J. Grirashaw, L. Stevenson, F. J. Moliard senr., I). Heron, and A. M. Costain. Recitations were given by tho Misses T. Dull'm and M. neron and Mr J. Fulton. The Committee responsible for the arrangements were as follows : Stage decorations, etc., Messrs P. Lewis (Secretary of Entertainment Committee), E. Revell, R. G. Wright, A. Smeed, D. Fulton, W. Young and J. Cruickshank ; supper, Mesdames P. Lewis, P. Fulton, W. Smeed senr., J. Cruickshank and the Misses J. Nicholl and A. and B. Lewis. Sweets were sold by Misses F. Lewis and G. Leamen. For the dance Messrs W. Young and W. Collins acted as M.C.'s and L. Stevenson and W. H. Northmore as pianists.
With a view of combating the erroneous impressions prevailing in some circles that the amount of rates' payable on the capital value of properties on Dominion Road would not pay the interest and sinking fund on the amount allocated fur that thoroughfare in the proposed loan, a comparative return with the rates payable on other properties in connection with the allocations for other roads in the district has been prewired and shows that the raies received from Dominion Road will more than pay double the amount that will be incurred by way of the allocation for that road and also that most of the properties on the other roads, including those on the main street will fully pay their proportion of liability. Oapt Ryder's Road will be an exception, but in that case the work is considered necessary as the road will carry the traffic to and from the butter factory shortly to bo erected.
From " Somewhere in Franco," Private Geo. Poole writes to Mr Chas. Reehal to the effect that Syd Collins is doing well in surroundings which admirably suits him and that Pat Reidy has been promoted to
Lanre-Corpor.il and transferred to another brigade. The present deplorable condition of the main road and other roads in the district should bring home to the ratepayers the urgent necessity of the projected loan being sanctioned.
