GIRL SCOUTS' CONCERT.

With a commendable desire to do their part in alleviating the sufferings of the brave Belgians the Pukelcohe Girl Scouts gave a concert in the piesence of a large audience in the Premier Hall last Saturday afternoon, the proceeds being devoted to the Belgian Fund. The proceedings right through had a patriotic trend, a bright a*nd sparkling programme being presented and being carried out in a manner that did eminent credit to the young performers as well as to Miss Williams (Scout Mistress), Miss E. Thompson (Scout Hon. Sec.) and Mr C. Koadley, who jointly shared in the preliminary organising and training duties. The stage settings, -for which Mr Koadley, assisted by Miss Ivy Duncan, was responsible, were peculiarly attractive and appropriate to the occasion. flags and paper bells being most artistically hung whilst prominet as a centre-piece were miniature Hags arranged in order representative of Lord Nelson's famous signal to his fleet at the battle of Trafalgar '• England expects that every man this day will do his duty." The Scouts marched in procession to the hall in costume and carrying flags and after the opening tableau Mr C. K. Lawrie made a stirring speech, relative to the hardships endured by the Belgians as a result of their gallautry in having held up the invading German force in order to assist the other allied nations in their

preparations for the war. As "Britannia" in the tableau bearing that name as well as in the scenic representation of " Motherlaud," Miss E. Thompson filled the role with grace and dignity, her stage presence being in every way typical of the noble character she asiuined. Alike in the chorus songs, marches and drills the. Scouts acquitted themselves to advantage. The individul efforts were also highly pleasing, and encores were frequent songs being rendered by Miss Ivy Duncan, MissEdie Perkins, Miss Hazel lilake and Master Leslie Roadley, whilst recitations were given by Miss Jeau McArthur and Miss Amy Wcods, a monologue by Miss Williams and a mandolin solo by Miss Thompson. A Highland dance was performed by the Misses Woods and Blake, Masters C. Maxwell and L. Roadley, and the programme concluded with the begging song " Please Give Me a Penny " by tho Misses Edie Perkins, B. Perkins, M. Cellars, Hazel Blake, and Amy Wood, assisted by Masters J Rogers and C. Maxwell. Tkis latter eilurt and the earlier appeal recitation by Miss Jean McArthur brought forth a shower of coins, the amount thus collected being £l Is BJ. The accompaniments were played by Misses E. Thompson, Linda Perkins, and lioutley. During the afternoon a presentation of a case of silyer spoons was made by the Scout President (Mrs H. Dell) to Miss Edie Perkins for being the most regular attendant at Scout gatherings.
