POKENO.

In tho Auckland Magistrate's Court on Friday ail application wss made by Alice Fieicher (Mr W. Vallance) for an increase in the amount provided in a maintenance order issued against her husband, Joseph Fletcher (Mr C J. Tunks). The current order was for 7s (id a week, and plaintiff claimed that in view of the better circumstances in which the defendant had betn placed tiuce the issue of the order, an increase should bo made. It was stated for the defendant that he bad a good home for his wife at Pokeno, but she refused to live with him. The order was amended to 10s a week.

WAERENGA.

SUCCESSFUL MASCIUEKA.DE BALL. A most successful masquerade, plain and fancy dress bull was held iu the Public Hall last Fridayevening for the purpose of assisting the Fund for the dependants of British sailors lost and wounded during the war. The function was in the rapable hands of the Patriotic Committee, of which Miss B. Freegard and Mr W. Jefferis are joint secretaries and a really enjoyable evening was spent. A splendid spectacular elfect was created by tha costumes, some 20 couples appearing iu fancy dress. With a view ot harmonising the details a valuable collection of flags were used to decorate the walls of the hall.

During the proceedings the musicians, Mrs S. Hamilton and Mr S. Dimock, were called on to adjudicate in respect to the. costumes and the following were awarded prizes, viz. : Best ladies', Miss E. Jefferis ; Lest gent's, Mr J. Elliott ; best comic, ladies, Mrs C. Ching; gents, Mr Bruce. The effort will result in a sum in the vicinity of £ I boing donated to the Fund.

There were present a fair number of visitors, who spoke in high terms of the hospitality they received and the pleasant manner in which the duties of M.C.'s were carried out by Mr C. Ingram.

A subscription list for the same cause is being circulated in the district and the total donations to date, amount to about £4O. It is understood that Mr Geo. H. Herbert C.E., engineer and clerk to the Whangamarino Road Board, has resigned his appointment, and that in future the duties of clerk will be carried out by Mr R. T. Pownall, of To Kauwhata, while Board members will undertake the supervision duties that were attended to by MrHerbeit.
