DAIRY ANALYST NEEDED.

Suggestion to Dairy Com-

panies.

A suggestion hi*s been male, atd we think it an excellent one, that steps should be Uken by the dai v companies operating in tbs Auckland province to secure the servics of the best-known dairy scientist in the world permanently for the province. Seeing that the VBlue of the da'ry produce of the province during the present season !8 estimated at £1,400,000, the cost to each company doing bi sir ess :n the area should not come to any great burden. If adopted the proposal should have a very nrarked elfect :n raising ths quality tf prtduce, and this fact alone should be adequate return lor the outlay that would be occasioned in the payment of a recognise! authority such as proposed. Should the suggestion be carried into effect, there is little doubt that the trust suitable location for the expert would ba Hamil on, which is the natural centre of an immense dairying district, the growth of which is yet but in the infancy stage, r'o far as we can gather, tie leading dairy authority in the Englishspeaking world is Professor W. Droop Richmond, the author of ' Ihe Chemistry of Milk," the greatest work on this subject in ixistei.ee.

It u useless, of course, to wait for ihe Government to move in this matter, but Bcme such scheme would be an undoubted benefit to the industry and would mean a tremendous thirg for Waikato, as t*ie attention of dairymen throughout the whole of the Southern Hemisphere would be focussed on the district, while the presence of buc'j an expert would probably attract hundreds of students to the place annually. The province at present possesses a la:ga nunioer of skilled buttermakers, but very few renowned dany scientists. The pavment for the service of ProJcisor Richmond would probably run into something like £2001) a year, but even this sum should be no great tax on the resources ol the different dairy companies, who, we be litve. wculd reap a quick beretit in increased prices lor improved quality.—"Waikato Times."
