DRYING THE ZUYDER ZEE.
The problem of removing tlio water from the flooded district of Xorth Holland has not yet been salved. About •10,000 acres ore now inundated in that provinco (writes the American Commercial Attache at The Hague in a r.-cen.- report to Washington.) Tho liverago height, to which the water must he lifted is only three to four feet, but the total amount to he pumped' approximates 7.00;>,i)00.000 cubic feao. Ihiri flood has revived the projeefc of drying the Zuyder Zee. and a'Bill is now before the Netherlands Parliament for appropriating money for this work. The cost is estimated at £lB- - part of which is to cover indemnities to fishenncn and for similar purposes. The cost of the dams will probably he less than £10,000.000. The principal dam would be about 15 miles long, averaging 20 feet in height. Onej of the mo«t important results accruing' from the drying of the Zuvder Zee would be that the new dam> would take Lie place of the several hundred miles of dyke? that now protect tiie lowlands from the Zuvder Zee.
