KARAKA ROAD BOARD.

Monthly Meeting. At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Kara k a Koad Board !»*W , on Saturday last all the members • were present, viz., Messrs J. batty, chairman, J. Schlsepfer, K:dd, McPberson and Jamieson, K with tbe clerk, Mr H. E. Glaasoo. VOIE OF CONDOLENCE. Before proceeding with tbe ordinary business a vote of condolence with Mrs Clark, in her loss of another son at the front, was carried, all members standing. PKOPEKTY EXCHANGE. Ihe chairman reported that Mr Kidd and he were agreeable that tbe old road, which would be obsolete after tbe proposed deviation through Mr Urqohart's had been made, should be exchanged for the property required tor the deviation, as tbe new route would greatly benefit the district.—lt was decided to proceed with the exchange. ALLOCATING COST OF BRIDGES. As the Franklin County Council's fall share of tbe cost of tbe erection of the Whangamaire and Hmgaia bridges would not he obtainable until the procedure of acquiring land under the Public Works Act to the Papakura aide oC tbe Fhngaia bridge to imprave the approach to tbe same bad been completed it was resolved to ask the Council for a payment of £2OO "on account." NO JURISDICTION.

Tbe attention of the Board was drawn by letter from Mr G. Nicholson, to a bad portion of tbe Runciman-Waiuku road, near Mr ' Halliday's property.—As the road waa a main road under the jurisdiction of the Fraaklin County Council, it waa decided to refer the application to that authority. RAILWAY DEPARTMENT AND ROADS.

Messrs Schlaepfer and Jamiesun were deputed to arrange condition! with the Railway Department in connection with a new road rendered necessary by the Waiokn branch railway line crossing the road between the Ostrich Company's and Mr Butcher's properties at Paerata. The chairman also mentioned that he understood that the Department considered that a smaller deviation would suffice than the one proposed for the crossing over Cossey's road, near the Karaka Hill at Paerata.—lt was decided to offer no objection to the crossing conditionally that the Department paid all the expenses in connection therewith. The chairman farther referred to the dangerous level crossing near Mr Crawford's property at Paerata and reported that the engineer favoured a safer crossing being made nearer the East Pukekohe road and closer to the Paerata rail* way station.—Mr Jamieson remined the Board that Mr Parkinson was prepared to give a piece of property and he (Mr Jamieson) w»s also willing to give another piece for a road and approach in the Karaka side ot the line for a new crossing.—The chairman considered that the Department should assist in the event ot a new crossing being made by bearing all the expenses in connection with the actual crossing and by assisting with the metalliog of the road.—lt was decided to request the Department to make the new crossing, the chairman to complete arrangements if the Department was agreeable to make the crossing and to assist with the metalling of the road. £2

GAINFOKD'S CORNER DRAIN. Mr J amies jn reported that Mr Hodgson Keith was anxious to bave two seta of pipes removed from tbe deviation leading to (iainstord's corner as the water therefrom was running on to his property. Mr Keith, he said, was prepared, it tbe pipes were removed, to make a drain and to keep it clean, ao as to carry away the water. —The chairman, however,' mentioned that the matter had been previously considered by the Board, wben it was ascertained that both tbe District Engineer and tbe Board's consulting engineer did not approve of the suggestion. THE NAVY FUND.

It was resolved to donate £lO to tbe fund for injured sailors and the dependents of sailors wbo had lost their lives during tbe wir, tbe donation to be attached to a list to be circulated in tbe district Tbe chairman also contributed £5 and Messrs Scblaepfer and Jamieson £1 each. THE NEW RATE. According to notice of motion given at the previous meeting of the Borad the chairman proposed, and it was carried, that a general rate of a penny farthing in the £ should be struck on tbe capital value of all the rateable property in the district.
