FOREWARNED.
The clear little office boy bad been detected in a. lie. It was not one of the ordinary prevarications of the everyday world, and, to make the crime more grievous, he had persisted in adhering to his original mendacious statement. "Do you know, my lad," asked a grizzled clerk, in a kindly fashion, "what becomes of young lads who trifle with the truth?" "Aye," was the assured reply, "the boss often sends them out. as travellers when they grow up!" A SOFT ANSWER. A well-known cleric is a very great smoker. One old lady, a member of his congregation, was very shocked, and bearing the cleric's son had cut him a present of a box of cigars, tayed him witli the fact. "But they s.av it is dearer in the end. Von get less gos for your penny, vou know, than I set for mine."
"Yes: but, you see. it's just this way wi' me. I never pin more in than cue penny at a. time, and ye see a. lot o' folk comes*to my house at night, and whenever the .gas begin? to eo down I just let on I haven't got a copper. And there is always somebody ready to stump up the penny. Oh, ye:-'., it's far che.iper in the end."
