MANUREWA.

WOUNDED SOLDIERS' ENTERTAINED. On Thursday, June Bth, theManurewa Musical Society, entertained about 80 wounded soldiers from the main hospital. Some twelve cars conveyed the men to Manurewa, arriving about 2 p.m. and leaving again at -1 p.m. The weather was perfect. A large number of local residents gathered at the Public Hall where the entertainment was held, and with the soldiers made quite a large crowd. After a programme of miscellaneous items afternoon tea was dispensed to all, the' girls of the Musical Society enjoying the task of waiting on the soldiers to the utmost. As the men were all convalescent the tea serving was a lively performance. At the close of the proceedings one of the soldiers returned thanks in a few well chosen remarks, and overyone joined heartily in singing 41 For They are Jolly Good Fellows." One of the Society's items " The Cuckoo" was the cause of much mirth, the words of the refrain seeming to catch the fancy of the men.

The Manurewa Road Board contributed £2 towards the entertainment, and Mr Druce, the chairman of the Board, was a prominent figure during the afternoon working hard to ensure a successful function. The ladies' committee of management were Mesdames Pegler, Eleman and 11 unity. Tho fallowing programmo was much .appreciated : National Anthem and Marseillaise, Musical Society ; song, Mrs C. F. Hesketh ; part song, " Moonlight Will Come Again," Musical Society ; recitation, Mr T. J. Corin ; ({uartette, " Killarney,"' Mesdames Margetts and T. Eleman, and Messrs Bell and Burton ; song. Mr Druce ; part song, " The Cuckoo," Musical Society : monologue, " 0 Memory," Mr H. V. Burton : part song, " Russian National Anthem," Musical Society. The usual monthly meeting of the Manurewa Eoad Board takes place on Monday next. A send-oft' to Pies. Chas. Paton and Le Petit, members of the loth Reinforcements who have returned to the district on their tinal leave, is to be given in the Public Hall next Monday evening. The adjourned annual meeting of the parishioners of St. Luke's Church, Manurewa, was held in the Church on Monday night, the Vicar, Rev. W. C. Wood, presiding. There was a very largo attendance. The

• election of Wardens and Vestry resulted as follows, viz. : Vicar's . Warden, Mr Clias. Hawthorn ; People's Warden, Mr Geo. Smith For the first time in the history of the congregation an election was necessary, resulting in the appointment of the following gentlemen as Vestrymen : Messrs Brown, Molesworth, Keyes, Corin, Mabee, Bell and Scott. Several important matters were fully discussed, and there is every promise of a most successful year of Church work. The new Vestry will meet for the first time in the Road Board oHico cn Monday, the 26th inst.
