MANUREWA.

A most successful function was held in the Public hall on Monday evening of last week when seven more local recruits: Messrs L). Woods, Taylor, F. Slade, W. Morris, Maine, A. Choppiu and J. Scerral were fare welled by a large gathering at a concert and dance. Mr Lupton as chairman eulogised the men for going forward to assist their fel'ov countrymen in the greatest sacrifice man had ever made and he warned unencumbered eligibles of tho near approach of the forthcoming change from voluntaryism to conscription, suggesting that they should make good uso of the intervening period by enlisting. As the only present available was that of Mr Slade's, a dressing wallett, the balance not having come to hand, the chairman handed that to Mr Slade and explained that on their arrival the remainder would be forwarded to the men in camp. The concert was greatly appreciated. Items were contributed by the following : songs by Mesdatues Hesketh and Margetts, and Messrs Burton, liawlhorne, Seaton. Mabee and a duet by Messrs Seaton and Mabee: recitations, Misses D. Lovell and Mr Corin. During the interval when preparations were being made for the dance supper was handed round. About oil couples participated in the fantastic art. The hall was specially decorated for the occasion, the credit of which is due to the committee who arranged the whole proceedings, viz., Mesdames Huntley, Thorpe; Misses 1). Lovell, n. Costar and Messrs \V. Phillips, IS. Thompson, Jenkins and I. Anderson.
