PUKEKOHE'S NEW LOAN SCHEME.
The new loan scheme formulated by the Pukekohe Borough Council and adopted, subject to expert corroboration, at last Wednesday's Council meeting, as recorded in our IS3UG of Friday last, hBB as its rutin object a final and lasting solution of the water-supply problem that has been a constant and continuous source of trouble, attendant with bickering and friction, ever since the inception of the exia'.icg sys!em, It is not out intention at thi3 stage to either endorse or to condemn the Council's proposals. We have had no opportunity of perusing the report prepared by the Waterworks Engineer, Mr Wyatt, upon which the Couccil have acted but to make certain that everything therein is feasible and correct the Council have, very wisely and pioperly resolved to a?k tar corroboration from an engineering expert and tfcen the report will be made public and the ratepayers • will be given the opportunity of judging for themselves whether the Council's proposals should or should not meet with the necessary approval. At this stage, however, it la not out of place lor us to point out that members of the Counr.il, however at variance as has frequently been the case on other minor or major subjects of administration, are absolutely unanimous in recommending to the ratepayers what tbey hope is a solution ot the present trouble. This alone is a matter of no small moirent and must carry no little recommendation in itself. The Council is composed of men of various shades of opinion—the majority ratepayers to a substantial degree—and one and all favour the scheme that has been unfolded. It is true that upon a technical point, connected with the loan proposal, Cr fatterson, popularly recognised as the "Free Lance" whose criticism is usually expected, has intimated his intention to resign his seat, but even he is apparently quite in accord with thd actual water scheme. It 19 also ot' interest to note that the present proposals of the acquisition of Hickey's Dam as the source of Hl2 water supply and the erection of a reservoir on East Street Hill (Kooss's Bush) lor water distribution purpose-' formed an Alternative scheme to the one
n-iw in existence th.it received attention from the uIJ Town b'oard and was only passed over tor the main reason that ilic al : itude of the reservoir woull not ail'ord a EUfticisr.t pressure oi' water for tire-lighting r.eceißitics. W'c understand, however, that 'the Council'B intentions arc that 1112 existing reservoir on I'ukekohc Hill should not be wholly discarded, but should be retained lor certain consumers dependent on it for a supply as also tor utilisation tor the means of coping with any outbreak of tire
