MANUREWA.
Manurewa Town Board. The second meeting of the above authority was held on Thursday last. Present: Messrs T J Conn, chairman, C H Lupton, F E White, C Coxhead, G Coxhead, H V Burton, E S Fegler, together with the acting-clerk, Mr A G Mabee THE CLERKbHIP The chairman introduced the question of the appointment of a permanent Town Clerk by express-
ing the opinion that applications should be called and dealt with. He hcc rdingly proposed that applications should be invited before the next meeting, to close on the 31st inst
Mr G Coxhead seconded the proposal Mr Lupton suggested that the Board Bhould, btfore finally acting in the matter, carefully consider whether a clause should be inserted in the advertisement to the effect that no single eligible men need apply. He said that the Government would be requiring every man and would be looking to the Board for assistacce

f Mr Luptun proposed that the clause as he suggested should be added to the proposal, but the chairman ruled that it was an amendment, and treated it accordingly Mr Ptgler contended that instead of acting prematurely by adding the board should hold the suggestion over until the applications were received
c jMr White, while supporting Mr Pegler'a views, seconded the amenda view of testing the matter
On being put to the meeting tie amendment was only voted for ty the proposer and seconder, while Messrs G and fi Coxhead, Pejhr, and Burton recorded their votes against 'i'he m Jtion wa3 then put to the meeting and carried On the question of salary to te paid being disiussac?, Mr White said the Board should not give too high a salary for the first year Mr Luptoa proposed that the salary should be fixed at £3O per yesr, and stated that all the work required could be done in one day per wesk Mr G F Druce, chairman of the Koad Board, who was present, addressed the meeting and stated that he had it on good authority that town clerks were paid at least between £SO and £75 per year
Mr Pegler seconded the motion "pro forma" Mr White considered that the work would be considerabl?. He did not want to go to extremes, but to arrive at a happy medium Mr Burton thought the Board would be acting wisely in obtaining information on the matter from the Papakuia Town Board, as nobody seemed to know what would be required of a clerk, or whether he would have to be in attendance at the office every day Mr Pegler enquired if ladies were eligible for the office Mr Lupton: Yes
Mr Burton said that it had crossed his mind whether it would not be advisable to call applications from men only The chairman stated that the question could be considered when the applications were submitted
'l'he motion was put to the meetirg and voted for by Messrs White and Lupton and against by Messts G and (J Coxhead, Burton, Pegler and tfce chairman, and was accordingly lost The chairman submitted a proposal that the salary should be £SO Mr Burton suggested that information should be obtained because he cjnsidered that if the work could be accomplished in one day in the week £SO was too much to pay
Mr Lupton was of the opinion that in taking the position of treasurer, Mr Burton lightened the duties of the clerk considerably The sctmg-clerk raised the point that the town clerk would legally have to hold the dual position of treasurer and clerk, but the Keturning Officer, Mr Oram, whu was present, informed the meeting that a treasurer could be appointed in addition to the clerk as long as it was made an honorary post The chairman's proposal lapsing for the want of a sicjnder, Mr Fegler proposed that £4O should be the salary
Mr White seconded the motion, which was put to tte meetiDg and carried unanimously, and it was further decided tftat the office should be open to the public from nine till 12 noon on two days in the week, the days to be chosen by tha clerk when appointed, and one of the days to lit in with the meeting day
FINANCIAL ADJUSTMENTS l'he chairman reported that in compliance with (he decision arrived at by the Board, he had ascertained the particulars of the financial status of the Manurewa and Papakura Valley Road Eoards (wbfch figures we:e necessary before a financial adjustment between those authorities and the Town Boatd could be arranged) and on his instructions the clerk submitted tic same, which weut to show that in 1915-16 the amount of rates collected by the Papakura Valley Road Board was £4B ii 3d, with arrears of rates £lB Os Bd, the amount expended on roads being £37 3s. The amount ot rates collected by the Manurewa Road Boatd in 1914-15 atd 1915-16 amounted to £l7l 5s 9d, arrears £2 12s Id The chairman went on to say that he had also applied for the specifications of ell road work under construction or contemplated with a view of the Board supervising the same. He added that all the Town Board could claim from the Manurewa Road Board was tne amount of arrears, £2 12s Id
At Mr Lupton'd request ihe acting-clerk submitted the credit balances of both Board?, i.e., Manurewa Board £199 Is 41, of which amount £IOO was earmarked at the beginning of last year for Brown's road; and Papakura Valley Board £327 ISa
The chairman pointed out that the credit balance from the Manurewa Road Board was earmarked for expenditure before the Town Board came ic to existence
Mr Lupton considered the Board was entitled to a portion of the Papakura Valley Road Board's c-edit balance
Mr Ptgler: They spent verj little on the district
The chairman said that he had not received anything definite in regard to the question trcni that authority, but he failed to see how they ccuid get anything from the Manorewa Koad board
Mr Lupton suggested that there might be a further credit balance Irom the rates jrevious to the period of which particulars had been given, wbicii the P«pakura Valley Koad Board had collected
On the chairman expressing his intention of waiting on the Papakura Valley Koad Board in respect to the question it was resolved to deter the matter until the folloAiug meeting, when the chßirman would report OFFICE ACCOMMODATION The chairman reported that as he considered the Board would be throwing money away to erect an office on Bkids, as suggested at the previous meeting, he had not pr;pared an estimate or plans as directed. He favoured the erection o." a permanent building, but considered that the matter should be deferred for the time being. He explained that the chairman of the Road Board had agreed to the town Board using that authority's office until further arrangements were made
Mr Lupton was of the opinion tbat the Board should use the Town Hall
Mr Pegler cuggcstfd that the Koad Board office would cot be agreeable in wet weather when the door and window would have to be closed
The chairman pointed out that the Board could at any time change to another olfics
Mr Feglei thought that a temporary office, if erected, couli be used iater as a store-room Mr White considered the Board should have an ofiice of its own

LIGHTING THE TOWNSHIP Two pricrs for lamps, one for £8 oa for an it candescent acetylene light, mcludinu post, lamp and generater, to burn tor seven hours, and another for £.'s 17s Gd, a kero.vne lamp, with iron frame, strong fronts and a burner and centre, were submitted but it wasdecided that the clerk Bhould ascertain and sabmit (o the following meeting particulars of an acetylene lamp, complete, that was being erected to the order of the f'apakura Town Board at a cost of £4 10s APPOINTMENT OF BOARD'S SOLICITORS
The subject tf appointing solicitors to the Beard was brought torward by Mr Peghr, who proposed that Messrs Rus3S 11, Campbell and McVeigh should be appointed Mr (J Coxbead seconded
Mr White proposed Mr Basley, and the chairman proposed Messrs Keid, Bailey and Towl>, but as there were no seconders to tha latter proposals Mr Peeler's motion was put to the meeting and agreed to SHE FOB BKIDGE
Mr Lupton proposed that a deputation Bhould be apoointed to wait on the Railway Department with a view of securing a right to erect at any time a bridge on the Weymouth road, which the Department intended closing
Mr Pegler seconded, a'ld the pro po.su 1 was adopted
TOWN PLAN AND IEVELS The importance of procuring a plan of tne Town District and of having the permanent levels taken was introduced by Mr Pegler, who mentioned that he knew of seven townships that were put to considerable expense and annoyance through being allowed to progress on wrong levels. He considered that it would be impossible to proceed satisfactorily without both. He proposed that the chairman, Mr Lupton and he (Mr Peglsr) should be appointed t) carry the matter through.— Curried unanimously ELECTION EXPEiNSES
A letter waa received from the Department of Internal Affairs stating that the Government could pay the election expenses and deduct the same frcm the first subsidy payable to the Board. The letter stated that if the accounts connected therewith were confirmed they would receive attention. —The accounts pa r sed for payment totalled £4O 10s 6d MISCELLANEOUS It was resolved to make an inspection of all the roadß in the district on Thursday of this week with a view of instituting repairs where necessary, members to meet at 1.30 p m. It was decided to convey to the Manurewa Road Board the Board's thanks for their offer of the use of the Road Board office The acting-clerk reported that the authorities responsible had promised that the Board would receive the L istrict Valuation Roll by the end ot June
It was agreed to join the Municipal Association of New Zealand

MONTHLY MEETING
The first meeting of the newlyelected Road Boatd was held on Monday ot last week. Present: Messrs A Muir, C Coxhead, W Brown, G F Diuce and P Koy, and the clerk, Mr A G Mabee THE CHAIKMANSHIP Mr G F Druce was re-elected chairman TOWN BOKD'S APPLICATIONS Mr T J Corin, chairman ol t e Town Board, was in attendance and asked the Board to supply him with cpy of the specifications of a! works being tarried out in the Town Board a rea, both privately and by (be Manurewa Krad Board.— The clerk waa instructed to supply Mr Corin with the copy ot specifications for (he roading of C.xheal 8 road, Jellicce EstJte and White's roads, leading from Massey road to the new railway station 'I he clerk read a letter from the acting-clerk cf the Town Board asking for a copy of the Kcad Board's balance sheet and statement stowing amount of rates c:ll.ctcd and in arrears and the amount of rates spent on roads during the nest two years in that portion of the Koad Board's district taken over by the Town Board.—The clerk was deputed to supply the information required, and to notify th = Town Board that that Board was agreeable to the Town Board collecting the ai rears of rates in the Town Board area MOUNTAIN KOAD
The clerk was instructed to ask Mr Thompson, Mr (Jorin and the Manukau County Council to subscribe £5 each towards putting the present impassable portion ot Mountain road, at Brown's road'end, in repair, the Board also to contribute £5 It ED CROSS CONCERT A very tine effort to benclit the Ked Cross Funds wes undertaken by Mrs Alex Muir on Tuesday las', iu the Public Hall. There were over li'JU people present, some 8 motor cars ot wounded soldiers, with Dr MeCuire and Mrs Hudson Williamson, came from the city, and this party materially assisted to make the afternoon one to be remembered in the district
After a recitation by Miss Lovill and a song by Mrs McGuire, afternoon tea was dispensed Then Dr McGuire, who was second in command at the base hospital in Cairo, briefly reciunted some of his work in Egypt. The British Red Cress, he said, installed in their New Zealand Hospital a kitchen with every equipment for the preparation of invalid diet, and alsj put a lady expert in charge, la other Hospitals that ha and Dr Parkes instituted the British Red Cross placed every equipment they had at their disposal, ana that equipment was a marvellous assortment, beirg practically everything that would benefit a patient. He urged that it was the duty of every Britisher to support such a magnificent society, inferring to the Christmas festivities in Egypt he said that tho British lied Cross supplied 'Xmas puddings to every hospital in Cairo and made a presentto each patient iu thehospital.-.
Mrs Hudson Wiiliaiiisou, ul' the Victoria Loaguo, spoke enthusiastically of tho work of that Society. The hall was beautifully decorated by Mr Mabee. Mrs Muir hud willing assistants in the Misses Nellie and Ada Watson, E. and M. Wyllie, and Misses
Goodfellow, Carruth and Weston, all of Papatoetoe, and Miss Archdale Taylor, of Manurewa. Returned Engineer E. Sutherland contributed several songs. Mrs Archdale Taylor acted as accompanist.
The Rev. Wood, of Papakura, on behalf of Mrs Muir thanked all who had assisted.
Mr and Mrs Muir, though residents of Takanini, take an active interest in the welfare of Manurewa, and they deserve the thanks of the residents for the practical help given and the results obtained through their fine organisation.
MUSICAL SOCIETY'S CONCERT.
The Musical Society held the first concert of their second season on Tuesday evening last in the Public Hall. There was a good attendance.
The following items were rendered, viz.Choral number, " By Babylon's Wave," Musical Society ; humorous recital, Mr Alan McElwain ; song, " Land of Hope and Glory," Mrs Everett; quartette, " Killarney," Mesdames Margetts aDd Eleman, Messrs Bell and Burton ;. song, " Peg o' My Heart," Mr A. G Mabee; part song, " Moonlight Will Come Again," Musical Society; humorous recital, "Moro Humour," Mr Alan McElwain; song, " Thora," Mrs Everett; instrumental duet, "Neapolitan," Mrs Margetts and Mr D. Phillips; "The Marseillaise " and Russian National Anthem, Musical Socitty ; song, " Tell Her I Love Her So," Mr A G. Mabee; Part song, "Moonlight,"Musical Society: humorous item, Mr Alan McElwain ; part song, "The Parting Kiss," Musical Society. As encore numbers Mrs Everett sang " Rosea" and "The Soldier's Farewell," and Mr Mabee sang " Two eyes of Grey " and " My Posary." The public are unanimous in thoir opinion that the Society have made marked improvement in their singing under the able leadership of Mr H. V. Burton. Whilst considerable improvement is demonstrated in the chtrus work the individual effort of members as shown in solo, duet aDd (j- artette parts is particularly noticeable.
The Socioty start this wook to rehearse " Trial By Jury." Mr Archdale Taylor has promised his active assistance, and this is a guarantee that the production will be a good one. It is proposed to render " Trial By Jury" at Papakura, Papatoetoe, Cievedon, Manurewa aud probably at Bombay, The funds raised are to be given to the proposed Soldiers' Children's Hospital.
All accident that miglt have resulted in far-reacbiug effects but which fortunately was not terious in character befell Mr A. (i. Mabeo on Wednesday latt. Whilat motorcycling along Russoll road to catch the afternoon train for Auckland the machine skidded, precipitating the rider on to the ground. Mr Mabße, although badly shaken, escaped with slight abrasions. On Friday last, at l! p in., tho four-year-old son of Mrs McKerras, of "VViri, fell oil' the bed, dislocating and badly fracturing his left arm at the elbow joint. Mr G. F. Druce was at once communicated with, and telephoned for Dr McDonald, of Otahuhu. Unfortunately the Doctor was away at Howick and could not get to Wiri until late at night. Mr Druce found on examining the child's arm that the only thiDg to do was to set it up in temporary splints and bandages. This was successfully accomplished, much to the Doctor's satisfaction when he arrived. Dr McDonald found that little more could be done, and ordered the patient to the Hospital for examination by X-rays, as the bones were so badly splintered.
