A concert in aid of the Pukekohe Boy Scouts fund is to be given in the Premier Hall on Tusday, the 23rd inst. The movement is one that deserves eveiy support from the public and the conceit should therefore result in a crowded attendance.

At the evening service at St. James' (Presbyterian) Church, Pukekohe, next Sunday, a roll of honour, bearing the names of members of the Church who have enlisted, will be unveiled. A sermon appropriate to tlie occasion will be preached by the Kev S. Nixon. The necessary survey for a subdivision of the Helvetia Ostrich Farm into '-'5 holdings, ranging in areas of from 62 to 269 acres each, has now been effected and the properties are to be offered for sale by auction on Juue 2b'rJ by Messrs Alfred Buckland and Suns at their sale rooms in Auckland. The cause of the Allied Nations lighting with England in the war against the Central Powers is not lost sight of in Pukekohe, and accordingly a hearty response is being accorded to the Gift Sale, which opened yesterday and is being continued to-day in Lawrie's Buildings, in support of the Russian Eolief Fund. The sale is promoted by tho Pukekohe branch of the Women's Patriotic League, and active workers in the disposal of goods include Miss V. H. Webster (president , and Mesdames Baxter, Crum, Mcßae ; Mee, Stuart and Webb and Miss Usher. Liberal donations of goods, produce, etc, have been forthcom ing and any surplus will be sold by auction to-night, commencing at eight o'clock. An mi - naturalised foreigner, claiming to bo a Dalmatian and named Louie Vergor, was in accordance with instructions apprehended by the Pukekohe Police on Tuesday evening last at the railway camp at Paerata as an alien-enemy, who had not reported himself as such or had not obtained a permit for any temporary absence from the district. Verger was taken to Aucklaud on Wednesday by Constable Farrell and was handed over to the military authorities for detention at Soames Island. He had been omployed by the Bail way Department on tho grade easement w>rks and his arrest caused great excitement among tho other a'iens in the camp. The arrest was the first of its kind that lias taken place in the Pukekohe district.

The Loan and Mercantile sale on Tuesday last was the largest ever held in the Pukekohe yards, every pen being fully tilled and a number of cattle having to be offered in the drafting yards. The chief feature was the large drafts of grown store bullocks of choice quality and high condition from various run-holders in the northern part of the Raglan county, which sold readily at recent high prices. Considerably more than the usual quantity of beef was oll'ored, and prices wore linn lor all good quality. There is a general impression among those who are in a position to form a sound opinion that high pi ices are likely to prevail through the coming winter and fui into the spring, the large exports of beef having nearly depleted thestocks of fat cattle in the province. On a shooting outing speut last week-end in the Helensville district, a Pukekohe party, consisting of Messrs Frank Perkins, J. F. McArthur and J. J. Arrangements have now been made by the Government for an inspection of the Waikato River and the works of the River Board by Mr Ashley Hunter, M.I.C E., the wellknown consulting engineer. His instructions are to report as to whether the Board's scheme is likely to bo effective in draining the swamps south of Meicer, as to what its effect will be upon the navigation of the river, and whether it is injuring or is likely to injure the reclaimed lands at Aka Aka and Otaua. His report will be awaited with interest by many, and his appointment miy be taken as an indication that the Government is at last beginning to take a proper interest in the management and control of the largest and most important of our New Zealand rivers. It is understood that Mr Hunter will make his inspection during the present month. A most enjoyable social was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Pukekohe, in connection with the St. James Presbyterian Bible Classes. The time was spent in games, which were very much enjoyed by all. A short musical programme was given by Messrs Climie, Stevenson and Hird. The accompauyments being played by Mrs Nixon and Miss McKay. An opportunity was taken by Rev. S. Nixon to bid farewell on behalf of the Classes to Mr Edward G. Stevenson, who is leaving Pukekohe to take a position in Auckland Mr Stevenson has been a hard worker for the Classes and his willing service will be greatly missed by all. The Rev. Nixon gave a brief address and a9ked for the co operation of the Classes in the building of the Church Hall for Sunday Schoo 1 , Bible Class and gymnasium work. He intimated the fact thai £2OO was already assured. Judging by the reception ho got from the hundred members present the hall ought soon to be au accomplished fact—if the young people have anything to do with it. It is intended to hold the socials monthly during the winter and they will be run ou linos wnich are <juite new to Pukekohe.. The singing of Auld Lang Syne brought to a close one of the most successful evenings ever held in Pukekohe.

On Wednesday afternoon, at the Carnival Tea Rooms, the Pukekohe Soldiers' Farewell Committee met and farewelled Sapper T. A. Bowden, of the 13th Reinforcements, and Lance-Corporal Matthew Edgar, of the Red Cross Section. The Mayor, Mr H. G. R. Mason, presided. Each of ilio men weiv presented with a wristlet watch on behalf of the public of Pukekohe. By invitation Mr Joe Willis was also present, and was extended a hearty welcome on behalf of the community. Mr Willis left with the First Expeditionary Force and was at the landing at Gallipoli, spending several monthsfighting on the Peninsula, and be ing eventually shot through the knee. Althougn he is mending in health he has been declared unfit for further service and has received his discharge. Lance Corporal Edgar has previously been to the front and was among the last to leave Gallipoli at the evacuation. He was invalided back to Now Zealand, aud having now recovered his health is about to return to Trontham prior to further active service
