KOAD DEVIATION SCHEMES RATEPAYERS' VIEWS 10 BE SOUGHT The controversy in regard to the desirability or otherwise of the Raglan County Council sanctioning the proposal for a road deviation through Mr Hamilton's property at Onewhero in place of expending further money on the thoroughfare known as Henderson's Gaily reached a further stage on Wednesday last, when it again received attention at a meeting of the County Council A deputation, cons'sting of Messrs W Keyes, S H Crawford, L Allrn, Ed Muir, and T Muir, attended the meeting in support of the deviation scheme, but prior to any discussion thereon the cierk read a letter from the Minister of Public Works stating that he (the Minister) had received a communication trom Mr S H Crawford urging tie desirability of the deviation and judging from a report submitted by the District Engineer it seemed to him (the Minister) that the proposal to 1 evert to the old roa<*, which was clcsei some 22 years ago, had a very great deal to commend it. He therefore enquired whether the Council was willing to undertake the survey of the old road and pay for compensation, provided the Government subsidised botn the formation and the metalling of the deviation. Tte approximate cost of forming tlu suggested deviation woulf*, the Minister added, be £2OO tor earthwork, £SO for culverts, £l2O tor lencing, and, in addition, whatever compensation it would be necessary to pay Mr Hamilton. As the new line would save 20 chains in distance, a considerable amount would be saved in metalling the road on this route as compared with metalling the existing road

A petition protesting againßt their rates being expended on the proposed road on the ground* that any benefits gained would not warrant the outlay and that the Te Hirua l'ost Ullice, Public Hall and library would be cut utr from the Te Hirua reeidents, was then submitted by Cr Moore and read by the clerk. The signatures attached thereto., were as follows:—H te Aho, U Henderson, Jas W Henderson, A Catbcart, D Fultun, C W McKetzie, J K McKibbon, F Ceraghty, M J Cathcart. J Cummings, K G Glasogw, F W Blackmore, C A Henderson, St J Hills, E Dufaur, A U Watson, C N Kelsey, K K Kelsey, V C S Lawson, C E Walter, G W bates. W Liddle, J York, W H Alexiidcr, G F Willi?, C B Spraggon, J A ladale, L Aisalbie G W Kevell, J Aston ; F J Davies, E M Andrew?. 13 A Moore, N Ohlson, E H Collier, C A L Lindberg, J Fellow, .1 McDonald. A H McDonald and H Dyer Mr Crawford, od behalf of the deputation, offered £l5O towards executing the deviation and expressed the opinion that a furlh-r sum of £59 for the same purpose could be secured if the work was put in hand. He further tuggested that his and Mr D Cameron's rates should be held tor several years with a view of helping to defray the amount, the Council would be responsible for in the event ot the work being proceeded with Mr Keyes considered that in view of the assistance offered together with the subsidy from the Public Works Department and £SOO unexpended from HcnderEon's Gully, that the request should commend itself to the Council's favourable consideration.

Cr Otway emphasised the importancs and necessity of dealing with the questions of compensation and legal expenses—the two most iir portant items jn point ol the amounts that would have to be paid-before Cecidirg to proceed witl) the work. He further pointed out that despite a new deviation the Gully road would have to be kept open

The matter was then considered in committee and subsequently, on the motion of Cr Tapper, seconded by Cr Otway, the engineer instructed to prepare an estimate of cost of the deviation, the same to be laid before a meeting of ratepayer? lor their decision as to whether a poll should be taken lor the work

The clerk was . alsJ deputed to ascertain whether the deputations offer of JulsU would hold good in j the event of a poll being taken
