WAIKOA KOAD BOARD MONTHLY MEETING The first meeting of the newlyelec'ed Board was held last Monday Mr A E Bayly, clerk, temporarily occupying the chair. The members present were Meisrs A D Bell, W Duder, J Lake and J McConaughey CHAIRMAN RE-ELECTED
Mr A D Bell was unanimously re-Elected chairman of the Board A GOVERNMENT GRANT
In connection with the Board's request that they be given authority to expend the grant of £250 vuted for tin Maitaitai to Hauraki Plains road, the Prime Minister informed the Board of his intention to place the matter bftore the Hon Minister of Public Work 3 and the latter wrote stating that tbe matter would be dealt with by the Head Office of the Public Works Department
TO ASSSIT RECRUITING The chairman of the Manukau County Council requested the Board to call a meeting of residents of the Road Board District with a view of forming a committee to compile a correct return of all eligible men within the district. Tbe ktter stated that the Board was not requested to do any canvassing as the Cou'cil would make arrangements for a recruiting oflicar to do that work.
It was resolved to comply with tbe request, lh3 members to meet at 1 p.m. next Monday
A NEW ROAD With a viuw of being able to carry out the work it waa decided to request the Papakura Valley Road Board to try and secure an extension cf time from Mr Hanscb in regard to tte offer he made for the continuation of the proposed road through to Takanini to pass through bis property free of cost
MR McKNIGHT'S DEATH
THE ADJOURNED INQUEST An inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr James McKnight, proprietor of the Wairoa Butter Factory, whose body was found in the Harbour near the King's Wharf on Friday morning last,, was concluded before Mr E C Cutten, S.M., in Auckland on Wednesday Evidence of identification was heard previously. The was a butter merchant and a well known resident uf Clevedon, Wairoa South
Evidence wss gi»en by two gentlemen who were with the deceased at the Waverley Hotel on the evening rf May 4th about 7 p.m. The evidence of both witnesses tended towards deceased being in good health and a perfect state of sobriety The licensee of the Waverley Hotel, Arthur Albert Faape, deposed that deceased booked a room at the hotel about 4.30 p.m. on May 4th. Witness later saw him between 7 o'clock and 7.30 p.m. According to a statement made by the housemaid the following mornirg the room had been slept in. Witness further stated that the dec»ased was well known at the Waverley Hotel, and had never been seen there under the influence of liquor In reply to Mr Coate?, representing the relatives of deceased, witness stated that it was quite possible for deceased to have si'pt a part of the night in his room and then have gone out Constable O'Sullivan gave evidence as to the finding of the body at the King's Wharf. He stated that there were a few Bmall scratches on the point of the left jaw. Under examination witness stated that the marks appeared to have been caused by something rough. There were no further marks on the body The Coroner returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased died on or about the Ith May, the cause ot death being drowning. There was no evidence to show [how the deceased cime to be in the water, but a mark on the face and the finding of the body so soon after the deceased was missed made it probable that be fell when near the water, striking his face and filling into the water. There was no evidence that deceased's death was due either to foul play or suicide
After the end of the present milking season the Wairoa Butter Company will change from the present procedure of receiving milk to receiving hom2 separate! cream
The preliminary steps in connection with the making of a basket ball court in thu school grounds are in hand. It is understood that the undertaking will be accomplished by working bees Tbe annual meeting of the ratepavers of the Wairoa Koad District was held in tbe Public ball, Clevedon, on Saturday, May 6th, Mr A D Bell presiding, the annua! report stated that tbe Board was still carrying out a progressive policy in roading and in keeping in good repair the roads of tbe district. The proposed road through Messrs Young and Mullins' properties to Takanini station was aHo referred to, together with the proposed joint pound at Ardmore which was stated would shortly be in existence. The report also mentioned" that the Board contemplated erecting a ferro-concrete bridge at Browne's creek on the North road to replace the present wooden structure. The balance sheet thowed that the overdraft had been reduced from 4535U to £92, the rates collected during the year was £935, quarry receipts £Bl, and other receipts £556. Ex pendilurea were administration and bank charges £ll7, miscellaneous £79, publ'c works £159, roads and bridges £716. The report and balance sheet were adopted, and the meeting approved of the Takanini Station road scheme
