(See also page 4 ) The annual supper and concert held by the local Band of Hope took place in the Public Hall last Wednesday, and coming as it did at the end of the Easter holidays it was fairly well attended, but had it been patronised according to its merits the hall would have been tilled to overflowing. A splendid tea-supper was provided for the first part of the function. The concert portion of the programme was opened by the Misses McNaughtou with a pianoforte duet, which was rendered in good style. Then the Rev. Potter otiered up a prayer, alter which his remarks, clear and to the point, held attention for a short time. Ail the entertainers were highly successful and numerous encores were demanded and given, the performers being the Eev. Potter (reading), Messrs Seaton and Climie (vocalists), Mr AV. Dixon Mrs L). Nicholson and Miss Milsom (vocalists), and Misses McNaughtou (2) (instrumentalists). Speeches were delivered by Eev Potter aud Mr Climie, and were listened to with patience and attention. Mr Joseph Flanagan moved a vote of thanks to those who had given their services to the function. The National Anthem brought an enl'oyable ' time to a close. Miss McNaughtou was a successful accompanist, and Mr Syd. Fielding, the energetic secretary, worked hard with (he members of the committee to make the gathering attractive aud successful. The Ladies' Patriotic Guild met on Thursday afternoon last, when afternoon tea was provided by Misses Bernard and Barnes. The attendance was not up to the usual standard, no doubt owing to the holidays. The under-mentioned goods were handed in Mrs Flanagan, 3 pairs socks; Mrs McMuytrie, Mrs Smallfield and Mrs Barclay, 2 pairs socks each ; Mrs Bremner, Mrs John Blake, Mrs Thomas Brooks, Mrs I, Wall) Mrs GHusson, Mrs Hewlett, Mrs Bruce, Mrs Fyfe, and Misses McPherson, Barnes, Bernard, 1 pair socks eacJi; Mrs John Dickson, Balaclava caps. Several of the residents are busy exterminating noxious weeds, and the action of the Franklin County Council in bringing transgressors of the Noxious Weeds Act to book is anxiously awaited. The gorse and blackberry are a menace to those who wish to keep their land clean, aud it is hard that they should suffer through the neglect of the absentee proprietor, whose aim is to benefit himself by the labour of the industrious ones who enhance the value of his land. At the Aucklund Police Court on Friday an elderly man, William Guun, was charged with obtaining £l Ids from Mrs Margaret Taylor, of the Drury Hotel, by moans of false pretences. Detective-Sergeant Hollis said that the accused, by representing himself as a traveller for a city linn, obtained board to ijhe value of £1 10s.
