CARNEGIE WAS TOO CUTE.
In spite of the fact that lie is so lavish with his money,. Mr. Carnegie is very particular that his generosity shall not be abused, and the following incident is characteristic of the man. One day the millionaire was our walking in the country when he saw a yokel putting a straw thatch 0:1 his house. Carnegie asked him why he did not put on a tiled roof, and was told that it was too expensive. "How much would a tiled roof cost " he inquired. "Fifty pounds, sir." replied the yokel. Without another word. Carnegie pulled out his cheque-book and wrote the astonished countryman a cheque for that amount. When Carnegie had gone, the yokel went indoors and told his wife of his amazing good fortune, whereupon she began to scold hivj and said lie ought to have asked for more. "Why didn't you ask for £7."i? she said, "lie would have given it to you." *■' The yckel. thinking that lie had been too modest, set out for Mr. arnegie's residence. Fkibo Castle, and on being shown into the millionaires study, told him that ne had underestimated the cost, and that it would

The yokel, thinking he war, in for a "good thing," handed back the cheque. Carnegie took it. from him. tore it into small pieces, and .showed 'lis giceu\ visitor the door.
