BUCKLAND.

FAREWELL FUNCTIONS. Oil Thursday evening, March olsf, a social evening was tendered to Corporal Marshall, who was home on hi 3 tinal leave prior to taking his departure with 12th Reinforcements for the front, and also to the Rev. G. and Mrs Frost who were proceeding to Ashburton. A very pleasant evening was spent and a good musical and vocal programme wts gone through, the performers being Mis McAnally, Misses Bagnall, and Miss McKay, Messrs Hird, Wilson, A. Smith, T. Walker, and others, Miss G. Neal gave a pianoforte solo. The accompaniments were played by Miss Allan, Miss Wright and Mis* Bagnall. Mr Allan, who occupied the chair, spoke in glowing terms of Corporal Marshall as a private citizen, and said be had no doubt that he would give a good account of himself at the front. Mr Allan further referred to the good work performed by the Rev. G. Frost on behalf of the Methodist Church. Mr Pitfgott eudorsed Mr Allan's remarks.

Corporal Marshall sui ably responded, as also did the Rev. G. Frost Supper was handed round by the ladies and the singing of Auld Lang Syne concluded the proFriday evening last a number of friend-: assembled at the residence of Mr Kelson to bid him farewell on his departure in company with Mrs Kilson and daughter for England, where Mr Kelson will join his old regiment (the Bth Hussars) for active service. The evening was interpersed with songs and recitations, la proposing the toast of " Our Guest" Mr Gummer referred to the sacrifice Mr Kelson was making to serve his King and Empire by leaving a, good home and a farm which he had brought in from a practical wilderness to a productive pasture. All joined in wishing Mr Kelson and family a pleasant journey and safe leturn.
