ESCAPE FROM SUBMARINE.
A TRANSPORT'S ADVENTURE. The i.oiiiiiiaiuk-r (it' a largo transport, writing to tin* secretary ot the Imperial M.rci .nt Service Ouild, London, requests that body to warn navigators to look out lor discoloured water when in submarine areas, as ho states that Lis vessel hac a most miraculous escape from heing torpedoed. 'Hie capta n was on the bridge when the incident happened. He relates that lie saw discoloured water on the port beam :!I,ut ■"•Hi' yai.is away. Instantly ho put the ile'lii hard a-porf, and a> the >ii;p «a- travelling at lull speed she an.-Wi'i'e ih< r lieha at i.nce. A- soon as she began to s.vuig the commander saw 11..■ periscope of a ,-übmarine emerge from the discoloured water, and a few seconds later he (.iseerned a torpedo coming toward his ship. Fortunately the tor pedo < leared the vessel by a hundred feet. Concluding his letter, he adds: "My experiences may be of some i:s,- to other members of the profession to look out for discoloured water, and treat same a.-> a submarine."'
