KOHANGA.
KOHANGA ATHLETIC CLUB. ANNUAL SPORTS' MEETING. Ideal weather favoured tire annual sports meeting of the Kohanga Athletic Club held in Mr T. F. Muir's paddock on Wednesday last. The attendance was up to the usual average and a pleasant day was spent, the Kohanga Maori band enlivening the proceedings with a programme of music. Visitors were present from all the surrounding districts, motor cars and other vehicles being much in evidence. Keen interest was taken in the events, so much so that the " clerk of the course " had occasion to use a heavy stockwhip which was heard cracking from all parts of the ground, to keep the onlookers from intruding on the track. The Kohanga Cup Handicap, of 220 yds, which was won by T. Charles, was a very exciting race and was in doubt right up to the finish. Another vory good item was the Pace Race Handicap (mounted), which was won by W. Shaw with G. Walters second. The results were as follows, viz. : Maiden Handicap (local) 120 yards—Toko Hira 1, J. Thompson 2, Tira Grey 3. 440 yds Handicap—P. Turner 1, Roa Hira 2, W. Dobson 3. Boys Race, 100 yds, under 14 years—P. lievell 1, I. Tupaea 2, T. Tini -'5. Pace Race Handicap—W. Shaw 1, G. Walters 2, Toko Here 3. Kohanga Cup Handicap— T. Charles 1, Thompson 2, P. Turner 3. High Jump (for men) —B Phillip, 4ft 11 in, 1 ; Nuku, 2. Every credit is due to the officials for the expeditious way the various races were despatched. The Committee consisted of the following, viz.—Judges: Ewe Hohua, Erueti Matet9 Kukutai; handicappors, N. Grey Kukutai, \V. Shaw and Toko Hira ; starter, N. Grey Kukutai; clerk of course, Pehi ; treasurer, Whiskey Tupaea ; hon. secretary, N. Grey Kukutai.
