VESUVIUS' CINDER RAIN.
THKKK NEW MOUTHS I.N THK -MAIN CUATKH. Professor Mailadra's report upon tlio recent Ve.suvian phenomena show H tliat thrw new fiery mouths have opened in the main crater of the volcano. Cinder rain and great masses of roek shot up from those mouths into the air nearly a mile l.ign, ;1 d then ,-.- led down the \uvi-ri ::),■ •. of the in viutr.in. During the intense internal eruption on January 3, when the central chimney inside the big crater Hooded the floor of the volcano with molten lava to a depth of about 10ft. over an area of somo two and a half miles of the crater floor ilsclf, a deep red glow from the fiery lava was reflected in the heavens over the whole of the Campania province, new mouths created by the tremendous explosions blowing away parts of the carter floor and showering jet black sand over the eastern area. On the night of January 6, in consequence of a fresh cxplos ; on, an enormous column of black smoke shot up 3000 feet above the top of the crater, while big incandescent rocks pitched out on the south-west of the side of the second and third mouths.
