CLEVEDON.

The district is bearing up well against the continued dry spell. Instead of the parched fields that one would look for a very nourishing aspect meets the eye. Naturally the feed in the paddocks is inclined to be on the dry side but it is infinitely better than what it was twelve months ago. Cattle, particularly sheep, are in sound condi' tion. Signs of prosperity are to be seen on every hand. Two commodious residences, one in course of erection on Mr A. E. Bailey's property, will when finished, replace the present homestead. Another, which is completed but not yet tenanted, was erected to the order of Mr J. T. Muiray. Unfortunately for those concerned tho motor charabanc which ran between Clevedon and Papakura last year and during a portion of the present year has had to be removed from the roads until the metal, which the Eoad Board have placed throughout the district, has settled down. In the meantime the horse bus is being used. The class of metal from Thorpe's •juarry, a sample of which has been spread on various roads in the district, should help considerably to stand the strain in the coming winter. An effort to have the usual half holiday altered from Thursday to Saturday is creating a great deal of excitement and from present indications it is ijuite likely a change will be made. A petition in favour of the proposal has been signed by a majority of the storekeepers and it is understood that the Road Board confirmed the application Constable Waugh, of Papakura, is engaged at present in ascertaining if the signatures are all in order. When that is completed and the petition is forwarded to the Labour Department a decision will be i given.

Several of the bridges in the district are to be overhauled.
