PAPAKURA.
S. L. Bygrave notifies his patrons that E. ILeid is no longer connected with the stables at the Papakura Hotel and that as from Wednesday, March Ist, the management passed into his (Mr Bygrave's) hands.— Advt.
A sale under the Rating Act by instructions of the Registrar of the Supreme Court of certain desirable building sections situated in the township of Papakura is to be carried out by Messrs Richa r d Arthur & Co. at their auction rcons in Auckland on Monday, the 27th inst Particulars will bo found in an advt in this issue.
At a special meetiug of the Town Board held on Monday evening it was resolved that Queen street should be inspected with a view of having it improved. The Board have since agreed that repairs are necessary, including the grading of the road and the formation of the water-tables.
Building operations are proceeding, but not as fast as the buildurs would have them. While there is plenty of work for contractors, there is unfortunately a dearth of carpenters. A further shop is being erected by Messrs Richardson Bros, on the property that they have leased under the Glasgow system. The additional buildings in the township should considerably enhance the valuation of the distiiit, thereby assisting the Town Board to operate on a larger scale. The majority of young men received the following recruiting circular yesterday, viz.:—" Papakura Recruiting Committee, March loth, 1916. Dear Sir,—Your name having been supplied to the Papakura Recruiting Committee, and you being of military age, we are empowered by the Recruiting Board to enquire as to your willingness to place your services at the disposal of the Defence Authorities. You will note from the enclosed card that you can indicate (a) the reinforcement you would prefer to leave by, or (b) you can leave you'self in the hands of + he Authorities, to be called up at two weeks' notice. We would draw your attention to the fact that this Jetter is another attempt to maintain ''the voluntary system of recruiting, and to impress you with the seriousness of the call now made on you. Any failure on your part either to signify your willingness or to supply valid reasons for not doing so will undoubtedly hasten conscription, and may result in your being sent to the front under compulsion. Please fill in enclosed card and return to Mr H. W. Geissler, Papakura before March 20th.—D. B Stewart, Chairman."
At a special meeting of the Town Board held on Monday last. The Works Committee were instructed to employ two men and two horses with scoops for three days on Park road and to prepare that road for winter.—No tenders were received for various road works, and time was again extended to March 22nd. Should there be no response to this third time of calling, then the work must be left for the next Board to deal with in October or November.— It was decided that the ratepayers along Keri Keri and Lower Park roads should be notified to clear all drains fronting their propeyty immediately. Mr D. Stewart (chairman of the Papakura Recruiting Committee) writes:—"ln the Papakura notes appearing in the last issue of your paper there is one referring to the Papakura Recruiting Committee which I regret to say is quite incorrect. Someone has misled your reporter, and I beg to reply that there is no dissension among the committee. It is true that one member proposed a personal canvass, but he was alone in bis opinion. As to what further steps the committee will take when the replies come in, the matter has not leen considered, so the somewhat foolish suggestion that some of the members favour sending ladies can only exist in some body's imagination."
