POKENO VALLEY
FARMERS' UNION RIFLE CLUB On March 4th a muster parade of the Farmers' Union Rifle Club Mas held at Mr J. Keith's, Maungatawhiri, members from Maramarua, Maungatawhiri and Pokeno being present, but owing to a misunderstanding the full Mauogatawhiri troop did not put in an appearance. Major Lusk from Auckland attended and "swore in" those members present. Sergeant Major Ansell was also, present and put the various members through their paces. Ser-geant-Major Ansell gave a lecture explaining the different parts of the rifle, which was listened to very closely. Afternoon tea provided by the ladies of Maungatawhiri was dispensed to all present and was appreciated. The President (Mr J. Dean 1 thanked the ladios for their hospitality and also SergeantMajor Ansell for the able assistance he has given to the Club at various times. Mr Dean further expressed appreciation of Major Lusk's kindness in attending and helping the club.
A meeting to form a general committee was held and the following were elected : Maramarua, Messrs A. Mclunes and W. J. McIlroy; Maungatawhiri, Messrs K. 11. McKenzie and T. Gordon ; Pokeno, Messrs F. W. Pyue and G. Lippiatt with the president, Mr J. Dean. The following dates for drill were arranged by Sergeant-Major An sell for the month of March, viz., Saturday, March 11th, at Maramarua; Tuesday, March 11th, at Maungatawhiri, and Saturday, March lHth at Pokeno.
