TUAKAU TOWN BOARD.
Monthly Meeting. The regular monthly meeting of the above authority was held on Tuesday last. Present : Messrs Dynes Fulton, chairman, H. B. Free, W. Strahan, J. Pirret, W. Glasgow, Captain Ryder and the clerk, Mr A. H. Tapper. A PUBLIC NUISANCE. Mr P. G. Fitzgerald wrote informing the Board of the practice established by Maoris of using the sections adjoining Mr P. A. Kowe's shop in George Street, thereby causing a nuisance. The chairman pointed out that it was private property. It was decided to notify the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand and Mr Madill senr., (the owners), that the sections were being rendered insanitary and to ask them to deal with the matter. POLICE RESIDENCE. In reply to the Board's request that the grant for the erection of a constable's house in Tuakau should be expended, the Minister of Public Works wrote stating that as the Police Department was renting a house at Tuakau which met present requirements and in view of the necessity at the present juncture of carefully husbanding expenditure it had been decided to defer the erection of a new residence. PROPOSED TRAFFIC BRIDGE. The District Engineer, New Zealand Railways Department, wrote as follows : I am directed to inform you that the Bail way Department cannot agree to a bridge at the centre of the station and the only sites which can be agreed to are at the present level crossing or at the site where a bridge was promised if the approaches were provided by the Board. If the latter site is thought by the Board to be unsuitable the Department is prepared to consider and will be recommended to contribute a substantial sun; towards the cost of an overhead bridge at the site of the existing pubiic level crossing. The clerk said that the Stationmaster at Tuakan had reported to the Railway Department that the present cattle yards at the railway station were inadequate for requirements. The chairman considered that the increasing volume of the cattle business alone showed the necessity of the Department erecting a traflii bridge, and that the Board should endeavour to have one erected at the George street crossing. He stated that if the proposed loan was cairied and the hill approaching the crossing was cut down the Department would be forced to erect a bridge at the crossing. He proposed that the District Engineer should be written to and informed that an overhead bridge past the cattle yards would not meet with the requirements of the district and that the Board urged the necessity of erecting a bridge over the level crossing, which every day was becoming more dangerous owing to the greatly increased public and stock traffic Mr Strahan seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. SALEYARDS APPROACU. A request was made by Mr J. A. Waddell, Tuakau, on behalf of the owners of the new saleyaids, for particulars of the Board's requirements in connection with the projected approach to the yards in George street which was about to be made. It was resolved to convey the information that a permanent crossing would have to be made, in the event of which the Board would complete the kerbing between the crossings, the work to be done under the supervision and to the satisfaction of the Board's engineer. Messrs Glasgow and Pirret were deputed to explain the Board's requirements to the applicant. ROAD WORK. The chairman reported that the Works ComiLittee had inspected Cole's road and in view of the assistance offered by ratepayers on the road recommended that the hill should be removed and the watertables cleaned out. It was resolved that the Board should assist in the matter as recommended. OVERDUE RATES. Several applications for exemption from the penalty charge on overdue rates were submitted to the Board, and it was resolved to amend the charges as the Valuation Roll included properties in the Town Board area which were outside the area. The clerk was instructed to arrange with the Valuation Department to have the roll amended accordingly.
