GRASS-SEED AT PATUMAHOE
[By our Travelling Representative]
Travelers who had noticed the splendid crop of ryegrass on Mr E U Cuff's property abutting the * Urury Waiuku road, will he interested to hear how well mis crop has pance] o it, and probably many farmers on some of our high-class land will be rather astonished at tbe result. Mr Cutr had thirty acres in Italian ryegrass, 'ihe lacd was well worked, but nc ureat dose of manure had been apralicd Threshing and winnowing operations have just been computed, so it is possible to get an accurate return. Ihe crop was threshed out of the stook by one of the local threshing plants, and a hay press was worked at the same time. Off the thirty acres there was pressed 28 tons of straw, and this was sold at £3 lUs per ton, showing about £3 5s per acre. Of the good seed there are 1200 bushels, and choice it certainly is, a heavy shttty sample, practically every pickle of which would fertilise. The s-ed has threshed out 40 bushels per acre, and has been sold at 6s ill per bushaJ. Therefore the seed and straw show a return of £l6 15s per acre—not bad for the once despised Karaka land. However, none will bergudge Mr Cull his good fortune, for he has, during the pest few years put in some strenuous work, and the order into which he has put a once barren property has done much for the general advancement ot the district. Also there have been prcvnui years when the ravages of caterpillars have seriously affected some good returns, so it is with pleasure I record the aforc-mputioncd results
