BOROUGH COUNCIL'S PROJECTS.
New Developments. Hints of Plenty of Money. Veiled bints of plenty of money berg available for ordinary and special requirements were forthcoming at tbe meeting ot the Pukekohe Borough Council last Wednesday, but particulars ot the 6ame were not forthcoming tor publication, and as a matter of fact were apparently only known to members of tbe Finance Committep, evidently not having been disclosed to other members of the Council Matters appertair.irg to loans were first reached in regard to the drainage scheme, whicb, it will be remembered, was suggested at the last meeting might despite the adverse vote of the ratepayers be proceeded with subject to auihority being obtained trom tbe Health Department. The Mayor, however, reported that Mr T F Martin, Counsel to the Municipal Association, had advised tbat unless a special drainage area was carried on a poll a loan raised une'er the Public Health Act would bave to be spread over the whole of the borough, and, further, Mr Martin advised that tbe law provided that compensation would have to be paid to owners for private property taken for the laying tf a sewer. The Mayor added tbat as the meeting of ratepayers he convened last week was so poorly attended be had cot taken further trouble in reference to drainage Cr Hubbard sugges'ej that seeing the ratepayers were ?o indifferent the Council should row wait for the people to ask them tor drainage The drainage subject then dropped but was incidentally rc-opened on the Mayor asking for instructions in regard to the offer ot a Papatoetce contractor to instal a nightsoil system in Pukekobe by way of a float, as mentioned at the previous meeting Whist this matter waß being discussed, (,'r Roadley supplied the scmewhat startling and unexpected intormation that the Finance Conw mittce saw its way to get any amount of money. The Council, hs said, were elected to manage the affairs of the town, and it was th:ir duty t> protect the public even agairst themselves Cr Hubbard thereupon remarked that unless the Finance Committee were going to tell tbem what they bad up their sleeves they should do nothirg tbat night in connection with drainage ''lt was, however, resolved that the Fapatoetoe contractor should be informed that the Council were not piepared to consider bis offer unless he was willing to provide an up-to-date sealed pan system instead of the float system At a later stase in the meeting Cr Koadley proposed tbat tenders should be called for procuring 10,000 yards ot metal from the borough quarry.—Cr Clarke seconded Cr Patterson; Where is the money to come from Cr Koadley: We can get tbat all right Cr Hubbard considered that in the absence of knowledge of the Finance Committee proposals the motion should not be pressed that night Cr Hoadlcy then expressed his willingness to deter his motion until tbe next meeting The Mayor announced that a special meeting would be called to deal with the reports of the Finance and Waterworks Committees
