ArVAERENGAWHANGAMAKINO ROAD BOAKI (Continued) The following business, in addi tioa to that reported in our issu of Monday, was transacted at th monthly meeting of tbe Whanga marmo Koad Board held last Satur day: Site of a Bridge The Ergineer, Mr Herteit, re ported that he had inspected thi site for the proponed Whangamarim bridge across the liver if the sam< Dame, and he was of the opinio: that the proper site wai at Drake': landing. He added that it wcold be necessary to form a road mi tbe (outhern side to give the s.ttlerE access (o tbe bridge Mr Keith stated that Mr Shanks and he bad inspected tbe si'.e and were of the same opinion as the engineer It was resolved that tbe Minister of Public Works should be written to and requested to have tbe bridge erected forthwith at Drake's landing, atd, further, to point out that if the request was acceded to the Board would form the road Work by Contract Mr Hall took exception to the action of the engineer in letting a £37 contract in tbe Hangirin iu!> division without calling tendets The engineer explained (hat the contract was let so as to allow the Board's grader to be used on arother work, and be claimed that if tenders had beer, called the price would have been higher and the worn wuuld have been delayed The cbaiiman pointed out that certain woiks bad been agreed upon to be done in the Kangiriri subdivision at tbe previous meeting Mr Clephane understood that the Board's bunes would not work near the flaxmill owing to the noise and he explained the contract was in close proximity "thereto. The job had been held up for three year*, and he bad been anxious that it sbould be gone on with The chairman proposed, and Mr Clephane seconded, that no works of £lO or over be let without first being submitted tj the Board Tbe motioD was carried
Engineer's Keport The engineer reported that he had secjred an cll'er whereby the Board cjuid borrow £IOOO at 5J per cent from the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Committee, tor road work in the Waipuna special rating area, but tte period of loan was for ten years only The chairman thought that tte terms would suit the Board, but Mr Bennett differed, and considered that the idea should be given up as it was too late ti ccn.'ider starting the work It was resolved not to proceed with the proposed lo.n Miscellaneous The engineer further reported that he had received a grant for the Tamwha (Jorge road, and did not anticipate trouble in connection with the others.—He was instructed to make strong representations for the balance of the grants It was agreed that members should inspect Lake road with a view of deciding where the £75 alloc ited tor work on the road should be expended In reply to an enquiry made by Mr Shanks, the chairman said that expenditure for the present would have to be restricted to maintenance orly
THE RECRUITING QUESTION CONSCKIPIION FAVOURED Consideration was given to the tecruiiing question at the monthly meeting if the Whangamarino Ko.d board on Saturday kst Mr U Hall proposed that a motion should go from that meeting to the Right Hon W F Maesey, Prime Minister, urging on the Government the necessity of embarking on conscription as tt.e only fair and equitable way of dealing with recruiting Mr Clephane expressed Ins entire sympathy with the proposal The chairman, Mr J U Urowne, remarked that he was convinced at the outset that what he termed as "a g:-aE-you-please style" (the recruiting system at present in operation throughout the Dominion) would not succeed. He expressed his disappointment with the Government's lamentable weakness in not adopting conscription at the beginnirg of the recruiting movement in the Dominion, and said it was ridiculous tor the Governmeit to put Ihe onus of responsibility in connection with the proposed new method on to local boJies, who were not conversant with the conditions that prevented men from leaving the Dominion like the Government waa. He seconded lli3 motion Ihe resolution, on being put to the meeting, received the support of all tte members

Members cf the Koad Board aru interesting themselves in ths proposed 'function, which promises to be a great success.
