WAIROA ROAD BOARD.

Monthly Meeting. The usual monthly meeting of the Wairoa Road Board was held on Monday last at Clivedon, when there were present: Messrs A D Bill, chairman, J Luke, H Walsh, W Duder, J Mc'Jonaughey, together witn tne clerk, Mr A E Bailey A JOINT POUND A letter was received frum the Papakura Town Board stating that they were willing to contribute the amiunt of £25 towards a pound on the ines agreed on at the conference held at Ardmore, provided they could claim legal rights, i.e., the pound to be under the control or the three Boards. The lettet further stated that Mr D B Stewart, chairman of the Board, bad been elected as the Papakura representative on the joint pound committee, and that application had been made to the Franklin County Council for assistance towards tha expenses of a pound, with tbe result that a reply had been received that the Council would contribute one-fourth of the expenses. It was resolved to endorse the Papakura Town Board's action in the matter and to accapt t'e Franklin County Council's offer of onefourth share in the pound. GOVERNMENT GRANTS The District Eogke'r of the Public Works Department wrote asking that all plans and specifications for the carrying out of road works under Government grants should be submitted to the Public Works Department for approval. Further, that it would be necessary to furnish a written guarantee that the roaj or roads on which it was propesed to carry oat such works had bren duly legalised. The writer pointed out that unliss some special circumslauces existed, which would have to be stated in the application, proposals would cot be approved ot until the above conditions were complied with. The District Engineer further advised That £250 appeared on the current year's appropriations in connection with the Mataitai to Hauraki Plains, via Oiere road, and that as it was a free grant for the purpose of forming and metalling the dray road he referred the Board to the instructions contained in the Under Secretary's circular of tbe 20th November last, before steps were taken by the Board towards preparing p lans and specifications for the expenditure of tbe same The ohairman stated that tbe latter portion of the letter referred to a new grant for forming and metalling the dray road it was r.solved to make application for permission to expend the graut on the grounds that the Board could do the work to tbe best advantage, having men and implements

NOXIOUS WEEDS The Department of Agriculture notified the Board that they were complying with the Board's request that owners or occupiers on the Old Wairoa road must check the growth of noxious weeds on their properties It was resolved to write and ask Inspector Kowan it he intended to act in the matter, and, further, it was decided that the letter, to* gether with the copies ol notices forwarded to the offenders be submitted to the Board's solicitor lor immediate action CONTROL Of A RESERVE Mr J M Ward, Clevedoo, made application tor the lease of a tew acres of the Koad Board reserve between the quarry road and the creek Mr Walsh eanl if the reserve was of any benefit for the Board's team of horses it woull be aJvisabl; to keep it Mr McUonaughey considered that the Board should keep the paddock The chairman considered that the paddock would be useful for contractors when working far the Board to put their horecs in Mr McUonaughey tbuught that the ratepayers should b3 asked to send in their rates early so that the interest could be paid off Mr Luke considered that it would be best to raise the rates to pay it of! THE HANGEIf The chairman reported that Mr Walsh and he had employed Mr Clark as ranger on the old terms, and that they understood Mr Clark would be willing to accept the position of joint ranger if the Board's concerned with the projected pound wished him to act BROWNS BRIDGE Messrs ti Cawte and 1* C Waters waited on the Board in connection with Brown's bridge, on the North road Mr Cawte that the bridge should be strengthened so that they could get an engine across it to cut chaff. He pointer out that they bad been unable for the past three years to have chaff cut The chairman said that the Mauukau County Council had a loan under way for the erection of bridges in the County in concrete, and the bridge referred to was on the list. He recognised, however, that it would be necessary to renew the bridge Mr Uuder explained that be had opposed renewing the bridge beoause a new bridge was really necessary, but there eeemcrj to be little possibility of getting it It was agreed that the chairman and Mr Uuder should have the bridge strengthened to allow tor the passage of the engine, the Board not to accept any responsibility in the matter "TAGCEU" The balance sheet was returned from the Controller arid Auditor C.'nerai with a tag. He claimed that tbe conditions connected thereto were reasonable The chairman stated that: be had b?en advised that it the Board intended to proceed that a public meeting would.have to be called and a map rf the survey would have to be at the Board's office for perusal Mr Walsh sugg-s'.ed that notices of the Council's intention to close the road should be erected in conspicuous places Mr Mct.'onaughey considered that the time was tot opportune to take in hand a proposition of such magnitude. The fencing would te expensive Mr Walsh said the proposed Bi:eratiots could be undertaken cheaply, but tbe wondered it the Board was in a position to act in the matter Mr Luke claimed that there was no time like the present, and that he knew of several ratepayers who were prepared to assist.
