AMERICA.
O, Land of Liberty! .Men see Thy banner Heating wide — Not. as of old, all glad and free, In folds of splendid pride, But dulled and dim. Thy bright stars wane, Dark tarn'shed 'gainst the blue; Thy vivid stripes alone maintain Their angry, blood-red hue. For, see, while through the windy .space Deep sobs of anguish n-c, America with shamed face Shuts out her children's cries! See haw from these appealing hands She turns'. To plaints and tears That wring men's heart* in other lands She coldly stops her cars. See how, when ocean's dark waves rift, And show 'ni d mist and spray, Where piteous forms all rigid drift, She turns her face away ! AVell may Columbia hang her head i What hoi shamed mother there. Tak'st thou no thought for children's deadfir is't thou dost not dare? Thy banner droops. Alas, alack ! Pale, pah', thy fair stars grow; And nought can brum their sparkle hack, Xer give their first bright glow. Algev.s. —.Maiy M. Curcliod.
