Dairy Companies Affected.

A dispute undjr the Industrial Conciliation Act, 1903, and its Amendments, between the Auckland Certificated Engine-drivers' Industrial Union of Workers and the AucKland City Council and others, will come before the Conciliation Commissioner at Auckland on .January 19th. Freezing companies, dairy factories and Borough Councils have been joined to the award, and additional employers cited include New Zealand Dairy Association, Waikato Farmers' Cooperative Bncon Company and Waikato Dairy Company. The claims of the applicants are for shorter hours, increased wages, overtime, preference, etr. Tha new demands stipulate a 46 hour week, exclusive of the time necessarily occupieJ in getting up steam. When two or more shifts are workeJ the men shall change in turn. Any time workeJ in excess ol 46 hours shall be paid for at the rate of time and a quarter lor the first two hours and time and a half tor all further time until the usual hour for commencing work. For workers engaged in "dirty work," to clean flues or to internally chip or clean boilers or prepare for Government inspection, double time ratei are sought. Time and a half rates are asked for work done on Boxing Day, Labour Day, New Year's Day, and King's Birthday, and double ratei for Christmas Day, Good Friday and Sundays. The minimum wage is Us 6d per day for the holder of a first-class certificate for a etationary engine; 10s 9d for a fecond-class; and lis 6d per day for a traction or locomotive certificate holder. When any worker is required to get up iteam or bank fires wben starting snd ceasing work he shall be paid an additional wage of 5s per week. Preference to unionists is sought, and the remaining in force of the award for a period of two years.
