POKENO.
yuite a lot of prospective buyers have visited Pokeno lately inspect-
ing jßrmg, and several have changed hands at very tair prices. Ihoße gold recently include Mr J Madill's to Messrs Carbine Broe, Mr T Evison's to Mr Jackson, Mr A G Diprose's to Mr H Francis, Mr J Madigan's to Me3srs Aldrcd and Murray, Mr F Abbctt's to Mr C
Landon and a cottage same owner to Mr V, Leathern. One or two other properties are under offer. !t is the intention of thu owner of the flaxmill destroyed by lire some twelve months ago to erect
a most up-to date mill on the old Bite at once, and to start milling op-rations again. Already oome four hundred tons of green flax
have been earmarked for this mill. Farmers are busily engaged harvesting, and quite a lot of very aubstantial stacks are to be seen on nearly ail the farms the district.
With farmers recognising the advantage of having their calves inoculated as a means of resisting blackle/, the Government Vet. had a very busy day on Wednesday inoculating stock brought by the farmers. He was at it from early morning until late at night.]| a
From present prospects it appears likely that a record stock sale will ha teld here on Monday next. The beef market has risen, and those having stock suitable may be depended upon to take advantage of the rise.
Although the flush of the seasin is over the cream traffic from the Pokeno station has not decreased, inn lying that the splendid season through which we have passed bas had a very beneficial effect on the dairying industry throughout We district. The wool traffic shows a very marked increase over last yeat'a traffic, which goes to piove that this branch has not been neg-
lected. Although the height of the potato season may be said to have passed the growers are quoting £8 per ton f.o.r. here, whicn must be considered a very satisfactory price. This traffic also shows a large increase. Unfortunately our local authority
does not keep pace wuh the growth of tbe district. It it did it would insist on those owning land covered with gorse clearing their sections forthwith. Quite a lot of
thiß noxious weed is to be seen ! round the townßhip proper, and it unfortunately dees not improve tbe appearance of the place. • ,
