WAIROA ROAD BOARD.

Monthly Meeting. The monthly meeting of tie Wairoa Road Board was held at Uevedon on Monday, Mt A D B:ll occupyirg t>e chair. Ins other members present were Messrs W Duder, H Walsh aud the clerk, Mr A E Bailey. JOINT UANIiER AND FOUNU A letter was read from the clerk of the Fapakura Town.Board notifying that teveral members of that Board wouli visit Ardmore on January Bth to inspect the site and discuss matters relative to a joint ranger bei g appointed and pound site being selected. The chairman reported that the conference had met on Saturday last, and general approval of the scheme had been expressed. It was suggested that each board pay its proportion of the cost of the erection and up-keep of the pound, and tbat a meeting of delegates from the Papakura Town and Road Boards and Clevedon Koad Board be held before the work waß finally ! gone on with. OTAU ROA Mr Luke, who was unable to be present at the meeting, wrote stating that he had visited the Otau road, but owing to the growth of f£rn and want of a plan he coulj only find a few of the pegs. He had instructed Mr Chambers to go on with such portions of the road as were defined. He also saw Mr Higgins, of the Public Works Department, and he was informed that there would be no difficulty in getting the Department to grade and survey the proposed Quinn's deviation. He BUggested that a legal document be drawn up and the native owners' signatures be sought as soon as possible. It was decided that the chairman confer with the Board's solicitors relative to the closing of the old road. A PROPOSED DEVIATION The Public Works Department, replyiog to the Board's letter, stated tbat the Department had no plans shoeing an old and a new road at the junction of the Mataitai road with the New Valley road. However, if the owners of the adjoioning land and the Board were agreed as to any proposed deviation, it was a simple matter for the Board to get the neceßeary exchange made by instructing the Board's tolicitor to prepare the necessary agreement. The Department, the letter added, was not prepared to do the work.

A FINGER POST Mr McKenzie informed the Board that ha bad erected a sisjn post for the Board at the junction of the Mouraoukai, McKenzie's and Clevedon roads. The Board decided to thank Mr McKei zi3 tor his kindness. METALLING CONTRACTS Tenders have been called for the supply of metal from various quarriss, but none were received at the meeting. Tbe chairman was of the opinion that the Board could arrange for the work to be done privately even more satisfactory than by letting contracts. METAL Mr Duder was authorised to get metal quarried and carted from Burgoyne's quarry, and other arrangements will be made for the other works. SKYHIGH ROAD Mr Walsh reported that he had made arrangements for the carting and spreading of forty yards ol gravel en the Skyhigh road and fatty yards on Kauri Clump road. He aleo reported that re had put forty yards of metal on Kauri Clump road himself tor which he would not charge tee Board. DOG COLLARS Several tenders were receive:! for the supply of dog collars for the ensuing jear, but it was decide! that the matter be left in the clerk's hand?, tbe tender of Mr Paton to receive preference on account of tbe quality of previous supplies. OVERHANGING WILLOWS Mr Walsh drew attention to overhanging willows on tha Wairoa river, and it was decided that the clerk approach vauous owne;s relative to cutiing the willows back, and also relative to the cleaning of creeks

OUTSTANDING KATES The clerk reported that there were amounts of about £3OO owing in respect of overdue rates. —lt was decided that the ten per cent penalty be enio.rced after January 31st. SYMPATHY Oo the motion of the chairman, a vote of sympathy was passed to Mt and Mrs J Luke in connection with the loss of their little eon, who died at Pukekohe last week. THE RANGEK The raDger, E H Dawe, who was only recently appointed, wro'.e asking to be relieved of his duties as soon as possible. The poundings lor the month were four horses.— The resignation was accepted, and the matter of a new appointment was left in the hands ol the chairman ;ind Mr Walsh. MAKAITAI BEACH ROAD The clerk was instructed to request the Manukau County Council to proceed with the work of making the Maraitai Beach road. Mr A U Bell said the Turanga riding had a big hurdle to overcome in connection with the re-building ot bridges and the grant for the road was only a £ lor £ subsidy. ACCOUNTS
