.+. New Year's Day, as 19 customary, w:s responsible for many picnics and joy-patties. Pleasure seekers were to be seen on the beautiful waters of Laks Waikare and a very enjoyable day was spent 01 the shady willow-clad banks of ths Whangamarino. A party of uowards of thirty assembled and afer partaking ot an elaborate luncheon provided by th> lidies enthusiastically participated in rpynders and qther games, while a swing provided excellent amusement for the children, 'lhe young ladies keenly competed in a race tor which prizes were supplied by the men, the winner being Miss blanche Mawson, The men were ajso jn an athletic mood and a large entry was posted for a 100 yds handclap, and the victor was the recipient of a cash prize presented by Mr F W Keith. The late Mr Mawson, Taniwha, who recently passed away in Auckland, had been for a number of years a quiet and much respected resident ol Urn district. Be was engaged in farming operations for some time, and had been until recently engaged by the Kjad Board. '
