"We'nothing extenuate, nor set down auoht in malice."
Voting in connection with the Lower Waikato Carnival Queen Competition concluded on Saturday and, with something like £IO,OOO accruing therefrom, to be passed on to the Queen of the South and thence to the Provincial Wounded Soldiers' Fund, the project may be said to have well justified itself for the purpose at which it aimed. As being able to claim the victorious Queen in the person of Mrs Claud Motion, Waiuku deserves commendation and congratulation. The organisation there worked on most efficient lines and with a large and wealthy district to draw on some exceedingly handsome contributions were obtained and these items, together with smaller sums most consistently donated and substancial receipts from various functions, provided a total of £6,300. Other than Mauku Drury, and Bombay, whose aid was forthcoming to a fair extent, the anticipated co-operation of the outside districts to the Pukekohe fund was not realised and the Borough accordingly had practically to carry its own standard. Uuder such circumstances the raising of £2,000 is not an indifferent performance although it cannot be denied that in some respects better organisation would have caused the total-to be augmented. The labour community of the town accorded their support in various ways to the best of their limited ability and the shortcomings concerned the absence of subscriptions from many residents whose possession of worldly goods is reputed to be not a little extensive. Tuakau, with only a small area at its command, did well in bringing its local fund to £560. The tinale of the Queen contest comes on Wednesday next when the crowning of " Her Majesty of Waiuku" will be carried out in Pukekohe. This will afford another opportunity to the public of showing their appreciation of the work done by our noble representatives in the firing line by rendering the day a huge financial fcuccess, for the furtherment also of the candidature of the Queen of the South in the Auckland Queen Carnival Contest, to which end all the proceeds will be allocated. Whether taking the form of subscriptions, admission money to ground or hall, or patronage of amusement productions, the receipts all go to the one common fund and it behoves the people of the Lower Waikato to put forward a supreme effort on Wednesday and by spending freely to demonstrate that the Lower Waikato both in men and money is prepared to do its share for the gallant cause that will benefit.
