PAPAKURA.

A fair and sale of gift stock was held on Saturday evening in the Public Hall, and was especially well patronised.' The proceedings were opened with a s lection of music by the Papakuia Town Band, which kindly gave its services tor the occasion. A number :>f stalls were erected in the hall, and were

well patronised. Towards the close Cot the evening goods on hand were auctioned by Mr Macreadie, of Auckland, and an additional £lO was gained from this soorca. Great interest was evinced in the competition* and especially in connection wtih the raffle for a notla little Shetland puny valued at £2O, " donated by Mr E. D. McLennan. This was drawn for on the stage, and Dr Brooktieli was the holder of the winning ticket. That the win was a popular one was evident by the applaure which followed tt.e announcement cf the result. A guessing competition for a bangl' waa won by Mrs McGuinness, and another for a tennis racquet and holder by Mr W. Mack. A cake wcifht guessing _• competition was won by Mr A. Mills, and other competitions added greatly to the attraction of the evening. "Bashing the Kaiser" was a popular form of amusement for the children and many pennies were derived through punishment meted out to the effigy of the tle'mati Monarch. This was contidercd to be life-like, and was a credit to the manufacturers, Mr and Mrs H. Walters, The nfh range, under the control of Messrs Jones and Tuely, waa thronged throuhgout the evening, and many prizea were shot for. The Carivnal Comuiittee did excellent work in conducting the fair, and the proceedings were lively throughout. To the Secretary, Mr K. M. Gillespie, fell a lot of laborious work, and that he did thia faithfully was evident by the success of the endeavour to raise additional funds. , 'lhe following were the stalli holders :--Sweet stall, Misses K ' Walters and G Cave; aoft drinks, Miss M Johnson; general, Mrs Jones and Miss Cave; competitions, Mrs H Walters, Messrs A Willis, James and W Mack; bash the Kaiser, Mrs G V Smith, Gisborne. A number of other ladies and gentlemen assisted.

The Mock Court will be held in the Public Hall on Wednesday, and notice of defence has bren given by many residents. The charges have been formulated-and will be beard by Mr Mock Justice Singer. A movement is on foot to hold a boxing carnival in Patmkura in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The .Northern Boxing Assrciatiin has been written to for permission to hold the evening, and a date is to be fixed this week.
