It is interesting to recall just now (says "The Westminster Gazette") that the inventor of shrapnel—Lieu-ten-inti-Geuenil Henry yhrajiuel— gained much !>f his military experience m Flanders. He nerved with the Duke of York's army there, and shortly yfier tho .siege of Dunkirk invented the case shot, "a destructive engine of waj used by tho Hoyal Artillery, and known by tho name of Shrapnel Shell." So rung tin* inscription on a large slab in the floor of the chancel in Bradford-en-Avon Church, Wiltshire, whero the General was buried. The inventor'-, reward was a pension of I'l2oo p»r :innuni. The Shrapnels were for three generation* cloth weaver* at BradlorJ-on-^yon.
