"PADDY'S FAIR" COMPETITIONS.
Paddy's Fair at Pukekohe on riatu diy last was the scene of some diverting competitions, which were carried out in the pr sjnee of a large and interested assembly. Mr F. W. Matthews wa3 in charge ot the arrangements, b ing ably assisted by Miss Madill, Messrs J T. St mbridge, J. Brown and F. Lysnar. For a hair-dressing cmpetitim, the cont2Htants for which were men, the following ladies allowed their "locks" to b3 experimented on, viz., Misses 1. and M. Brown, Grac2 Lysnar, N. Perkins, F. Moore, E. Maxwell, N. Uawke, K. and V. Kimbcr and P. Cave. The amateur (onsorial artist? were Messrs Frcome, J. Brown, J. Kogers, M. Brunnette, W. J. Wilson, C. Koadley, F. Kimber, J. Blake, F. Matthews and L. D. O'Brien.
The % time allowed was ten minutes aid Mesdames Dell and Perkins acted as judges and Mr J. T. Stembridge as timekeeper. Tha pleasure see'ters, were not lung id noticing various antiquated styles as resorted to by the men in their endeavours to gain a verdict and muco laoghter was caused by the performances of the less expert competitors. Ths judges fiua'ly announced that Messrs Roadley and Brown had tied for fiist prize and would have to r;-dress the heads of their respective "mediums." Such wai done, and Mr Roadley was eventually declared the winner. Mi s Nellie Perkins was the originator of the idta of the competition. Another attraction that was watched with keen interest was the sh oting competitions lor ladies. Some particularly good shooting was recorded, the winners being Mrs Long, Misses V. Kimber anf N. Haffke, while Miss Uawke and Miss F. Hansen tied for a first place rnd divided the t'ophies, The rifle gallery was kindly lent, free of charge, by Mr C. lorr, who further donated t!\e cartridges for the competitions.
Other contests resulted as follows, viz.Bun-sating competition: Jim Rogers. Apple Water-dip: Colin McArthur, Jim Roge's an! Ronald Brown (a tie). Girb' bun-sating: Grace Lysnar. Candle-lighting: Miss Blake. Na ; l Driving: Mrs G. Armstrong. Further novel ti s are announced by the Paddy's Fair Executive for next Friday and Saturday evenings.
On Friday eveaing a mysterious persorage, identity unknown, bearing the name nf "Mr Spondulsx," will mix with t"-e crowd present at fie auction sale and a present ot £1 will be awarded to ths first person wh:j asks him whether he is "Mr Spoiuulex," provided that the questioner is a wearer of Paddy's badge, such embtems being obtainable (price Is) at Paddy's Fair. On Saturday evening, when tne town is llkfly to be thronzed in view of a large attendance at the Sport 3 earlier in ths day, Paddy's *air will be conducted in the open air in King street. Ths proceedings will include an open air concert, a series of auction sales at different points, and a repetition of the hair-dresßing competition. Oa this occasion "Mrs Spondulex" will parade instead of her husband, but the badge (price 6d) necessary to secure the gift ot £1 from that lady will be of a different colour to that required for the purpose on Friday evening.
