Mr Heerdegeo, proprietor of the Fruit btores, adjoining the Pukekohe Carnival Tea Kooms, announces the arrival cf a large consignment from Canada of new season apples. The rainfall for October, as recorded by the "Roseiront" gauge was 4.665 inches, the same being the heaviest monthly fall for the past three months. In August the fall was 3.1 inches and in S°ptember 3.765 inches. A trophy consisting of a handsome set of silver spoons has been presented by Mr G. McEvoy to the Puktkohe tiiil Scouts, to be awarded to the most capable Scout during the next six months. Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sods are to hold tlnir horse fair in their Pukekohe Horse Bazaar on Monday and Tuesday, the 22nd and 23rd irist. for which entries are invited. A colt foal, the sire being Coronet and the dam Messrs Roulston Bros.' Secoma, is the latest addition to Messrs Roulston Bros.' stock of thoroughbred horses.
A tbundentorm accompanied by a gale of exceptional severity passed over Pukekohe laat Monday night. One peal ot thunder was of such a startling nature that bouses seemed to rock under its influence. A collection to assist the Carnival Funds was tanen up amongst the a.situblage tbat met in front uf Paddy's Fair last Fiiday evening by Mi J. I'dttersun, and a sum of £2 was realised.
Mr Edward Hallett, of Mercer, haß kindly donated a bullnck to assist the fundi of the Pukekihe Carnival Sports next Saturday. The animal vill be the subject of an Art Union, and al-o a weightguessirg competition (live weight).
Messrs J. T. Stembridge and Co. announce that a disc and driller (to be sold without reserve) will be included in the lots t) be offered at their usual weekly auction in the Pukekohe Auction Mart next Friday. Some early shipments of woo were forwarded last week from Pukekohe by rail to Messrs Buckland and Sons, Auckland, the consignors being Messrs Shipherd and Zin Zan, Puni, and Messrs Hill Bros , Waiuku.
A source of merriment at Paddy's Fair on Friday evening last wa9 the appearance of Mr Cecil Roadley attired as "Paddy" with the proverbial pig tucked tightly under his arm. The frequent squealing [of the animal added to the general mirth.
An attraction of interest in connection with Paddy'b Fair in Pukekube is the shooting galleiy. It is being conducted by Mr F. Brown, whose energies in that direction are being rewarded by sjbstantial revenue tu Paddy's Fair fund.
Corporal Joe McGovern was a visitor to his home at Pbkekohe laat week. Corporal McGovern leaves New Zealand for the Front as a member of the Army Service Corps attached to the Eighth Reinforcements. He was also a member of the New Zealand force tnat took Samoa from the Germans in the early part of the war. Gifti of ducks are solicited for presentation as prizes to successful competition at the Duck Pond Side Show at the Pukekohe Carnival Sports next Saturday. The birds may either be lefi cn the ground or forwarded in advance to the '"limes" uliice or to Messrs H. J. Rollinson and G. Armstrong, hon. secretaries.
The committee set up by the Borough Council to arrange for a public farewell tn departing troops and for a suitable reception of wounded soldiers met last week and appointed Mr C. K. Lawrie ps chairman and Mr J Coady as secretry. The other members of the committee are the Mayor (Mr H. G. R. Mason), Crs Barter and Motion, Messrs J. Roulston and Grigor. Residents of Pukekohe are reminded that next Saturday will be observed as a full day holiday, the traders having agreed to close their business establishments in order that everyone shall be free to assist at the Sports Gala Purchases for household requirements should accordingly be arranged for beforehand. The annual entertainment by the children of the Pukekohe Anglicin Church Sunday Sch ol is to be given in the Premier Hall on Tuesday evening next, and in connection with the event the St. Andrew's Ladies' Guild will act as hosts at a tea to be dispensed at 5.30 p.m. The entertainment given in the Premier Hall, Pukekohe, last evenirg by Professor Cirdston'B Mu'ical Comedy Company was of a most enjoyable character atd all the performers deservedly wen applause for their respective items. The proceeds of the gathering wfre devoted to tha Pukekrhe Queen Carnival Fund, and the artistes came from Auckland at their own expense. Prof ssor Cardstcn was warmly thanked by the local Executive for his kindness in arranging the entertainment. There will be no lack of the everpopular side-ehows at the Sports Carnival in Pukekohe next Saturday, the Executive of the Auckland Retailers Queen having kindly lent for the occasion a number of the amusement stands that have been doing duty in Auckland. Included in these are " Hit him on the AhHa,'' Duck Pond, Hoop-La, Dart Board, Knive Back, etc., and they will all be run by amateur showmen for the benefit of the Carnival Funds. An Ait Gallery and lightning sketches by local artists will also be included in the amusement programme.
Given fine weather the Sportß Gala and Picnic to be held in the new Showground?, Pukekohe, on Saturday next in aid of the Queen Carnival hund promise to be a distinct success. A large variety of events figure on the programme, and the public will also be catered for as regards amusement in a manner tbat ehould satisfy everyone. A procession, in which all the local organisations will take part, will be formed at the Three Lamps in King street at 10.30 and headed by the Pukekohe Town Band and the Pukekohe Queen (Miss V. Webster) will make its way to the ground. The first f race is timed to start at 12 (noon), and Urs R. F. Bollard, the Queen ot the South, will be present during the afternoon. «
During last week the Pukekohe Girl Scouts held a picnic at Yates' Bush, Buckland. Scoutmistresi Williams organised the outing and was in charge of it. The party left Pukekohe in vehicles at 10 a.m. Several parents of the "fair" scouts took part in the outing. A married ladies' race was run, Mrs Lusher being declared the winner. Dispatch work was indulged in by the Scouts, a real good performance being given. A pleasant half-hour was spent in the bush during luncheon time. A surprise awaited the Scoutmistress, inasmuch as little Hazel Blake, on behalf of the younger Scouts, presented their rHicer-ic--.-bargc with a sft. of vases and handsome needle case in appreciation of her kindly service?. The Scoutmistress acknowledged the gifts in a suitable manner. >■
A suspected case of diptheria in Pukekohe is engaging the attention of the Health Department officials.
The Carnival Tea Rooms in Pukekohe continue to do a thriving business and yesterday's taking* reached a record of £3O 0s 7d, the ladies in charge for the day being Mesdames Bockett, Clarke, Dell, Mcßae, and Webb assisted by Misses McGovern and Dell. Mr George Bushby, father-in-law of Constable Thornell, of Pukekobe, has set an example that may well be followed by men much bie junior in age. Although he has celebrated his nxtj-fourth birthday, hia past experience qualifying him tor membership of the Ambulance Corp?, to wfcicta ha is now attacher*.
