BUCKLAND.
As the outcome of a resolution which was passed by (he local branch of the Farmers' Union a public meeting, attended by some 40 persons, was held on Wednesday the 6th inst, to discuss ways and means of raising funds for the Wounded Soldiers. Mr Neal occupied the chair, and made it clearly understood that although the proposition originated from the Farmers' Union they had no desire to parry out the scheme as a Kacttiers' Union measure. He wished the general public to join iu and offer their hearty euppoit and co-operation. Several cf those present expressed their vi.ws on the matter, and all present resolved to form themselves into a committee, with a sub-committee to carry out the details. Mr £. Allan waa unanimously elected chairman of the Committee. ihe Lady liverpool League also resolved to co-operate with the committee, the committees decided to vote the Lady Liverpool League tbe sum of i>2o towards their funds, provided that the League did not do any collecting during the months of November and December. Messrs Uummer and Jeiieries were elected treasurer and secretary respectively. The Buckland Lawn Tennis Club held their opening day on Saturday last. In Epite of the inclement weather there waa a good number present. The president, Mr 0. G. Avery, with a few well-choaen remarks, opened the courts, Miss Neal, secretary, playing the first ball. Refreshments were provided by tbe ladies, and a Rood afternoon was spent. LADY LIVERPOOL LEAGUE. The monthly meeting cf the Buckland branch of tbe Lady Liverpool League was held in tbe Public Hall on Thursday afternoon, October 7th. Mra Wily presided and eighteen ladies were present, Miss Ragnall tendered her resignation aa treasurer, and the same being acccepted with regret a hearty votn of thanks was accorded to her for her past services. Miss Johnston was elected in Mies Bagnall's stead.
A cheque was received from Mr W. J. Jefferiss, who with Messrs 1. Wiclox and R. flartgland, canvassed the district for Soliders' Waistcoat Fund. They were successful in raising over the amount for the fifty waistcoats' promised, The League decided to vote the balance to the Christmas Gift Fund for Coldiers at the Dardanelles.
The following ladies handed in work:—Socks: Mrs McAnally, 8 pairs; Mrs D.iver, 7 paira (3 donated); Mra McKean, 5 pairs; Miss Johnston, 4 pairs; Mrs Walker, senr., Mus Driver, 3 pairs each; Mrs Hatt and, Mrs Johnston, Mrs Harris, Mrs Murray, Mrs Jesser, Mrs J. Baarber, tso pairs each; Mis 3 L. Johnston, Miss G. Neal, one pair each. Muffler: Arthur Newton and Mrs Melville, one each. Body belts: Mra McAnally, Mrs McKean, two each; Mrs jesser Mrs Avery, one each. Mrs Home, senr., five children's clothes.
