WHAT SHE THOUGHT.

The quaint sayings of children are always worth hearing, and few people know better ones than Mr. Pett Kiuge, the famous humorist. The following is one of his favourites and will take a lot of beating. One day he was walking down a street in London which was littered with straw to show that someone was ill. Just in front of him were a mother with her little daughter. The child was much interested in the great amount of straw and could not understand why it was placed there. Presently, says Mr. Pett Ridge, the following conversation ensued. "Mummy," asked the little girl, " what is all that straw put in the roaa for?" "Heaven." answered the mother gravely, " has sent Mrs. Brown a new baby." "Oh, I say, mummy," cried the little girl in surprise, " it must have been awfully well packed."

Smith: "Who is that fellow who seems so awfully popular? Jones: "Why, surely you must have heard of Lieutenant Dash, V.C., the man who shot fifty-nine Germans, saved the life of his colonel, and, in fact, has done all the most thrilling deeds imaginable?" Smith (greatly impressed): "Good gracious! And you don't mean to say that that's really he?" Jones: "Oh, no, this is Jimson, who claims to have gone to the same school i some years ago.
