AWHITU.

At the Auckland Police Court yesterday, J. Gilbertson was charged that on September 1 he ill-treated a number of fowls by over-crowding them in crates on a journey between Awhitu and Auckland. Evidence was given to the effect that on the date in question defendant consigned a number of fowls in three crates by boat and rail from Waiuku to Auckland. In one crate, which was 2ft. Bin. square, were 23 live fowls and one which had died; while in another case the fowls were standing one on top of another owing to the small space allowed them. Many of the birds bhowed evidence of distress. Defendant, who did not appear, was lined £2 and 17s cost.
