F. Perkin's and Co.'s New Bakehouse^
Judgisg by the recent action taken by Messrs F. Perkins and Co, it is easy to see that the firm are not pessimist, but are quite convinced that Pukekohe will continue to progress even in war time. There are those who, whan Sir Perkins s.ated that he was thinking of building ao up-to-date bakehouse, threw cold water on the schtme on account of the war. Mr Perkin's reply was, "War or no war, we must hate bread," and be went on with tha preliminary arrangements for the structure, which waa completed last week. The new building is one of ths most up-to-date of its kind in the province.
It is of brick and has a frontage to Queen street, having been built principally by Messrs Herbert and Sons, of Mt. Albert, who laid tbe bricks—Bo3o from Huntly of which were used on the oven and another 28,000 on tha whole structure, and aUo installed th? most modern of Messrs Beaney and Suns' (Auckland) ovens.
Ths oven was the suhj'it of most careful consideration and its efficiency is assured. The floors and walls of the structure are of reinforced concrete. Plenty of space has been allowed tbe baker in which to work, while special attention has been given to the mat:er of ventilation. A suspended verandah ensures the bread being placed in the carts for conveyance to consumers without liability to being affectad by rain, whilst similarly the raw materials, flour, ct\, will be unloaded free from the risk of any dampness from atmospheric conditions that have a tendency to produce "mustiness." lha new store rcom attached to the bakery is so large that large stocks of Hour c«n be held with safety from any of tbe usual causes of detenoration. Tbe building also, thanks to Mr W. S. Russell, ot the Fukekohe Plumbing Works, is thoroughly sanitary, being well drained and fittsd with hot and cold water. The structure, as it should do, presents a bright appearance, having been decorated bv another Pukekohe tradesman, Mr Rollinson. The fittings have been made in a workmanlike manner, with tbe idea of affording every convenience and allowing for the manufacture of bread and small goods under bygenic conditions. The carpentering and fitting was carried out by Mr J. Bellhousp, of Pukekuhe. An iovitation is offered to the public to inspect this most modern bakehouse, which, is a distinct credit to its owner' tbe architect, Mr John Routley, and all those connected with its erection.
